Sports and Beauty.

The best part of sports, for me, became the Sports Illustrated swimwear issue until my wife introduced me to Lingerie Football! Thank God, for alternative things during the football season! And then there are books, and the quiet outdoors during the games on the weekend, and delightfully the quiet outdoors during the Super Bowl, unless the wife takes me to a Super Bowl party at someone's house! Those are fun!

The food, at least with Black folk, is exceptional, and in abundance we have full course meals in big houses with large televisions! Laughter, jive talking, the soft smacking of lips sucking meat off bones, and the soul music coming from a room just off the side. Then the commercials and the biggest relief: one can watch the halftime show! There is no talking heads running off at the mouth endlessly during this time. I love it because during the regular games the most annoying thing is the constant stream of men talking from beginning to end, and worst of all: during the halftime shows.

People, groups, schools hustle all year to perform at these games and do not get in the national spotlight anymore! It's a shame, a damn shame! I can compare it to my childhood watching the games in black and white with Daddy understanding more than I do now about the game. Those halftime shows were something! They stopped fans in the chairs, rose them off their sofas! It was really something before the endless chatter in the same kind of voices took over the spotlight, the cameras and center stage!

The thin shred of interest I could maintain watching a professional football game was in the half-time shows, and the brief attention the camera gave the cheerleaders. The marching bands and the cheer squads obviously worked hard to be on the grid, but at some point some narrow mind decided the game needed more men talking incessantly about the game, and the half time shows were cut. For me, it is mind numbing to hear endless talk about the statistics, and speculation. Apparently, I am in the minority. Ain't nothing to do about it so I don't watch the games. There are many other things to do, and thankfully there are a lot of things I am interested, like science, and lingerie football!

Yesterday's news talked about NFL cheerleaders. Wasn't much, but it share trivial information about the sport about their pay, for example. These women have careers and jobs. They could not live off the $75 to $150 a game. It is much more. There is a reality television show about life amongst the Dallas Cheerleaders. I watched about five episodes. Interesting. An extremely tough, well written and thought out piece, John Kirkwood. I am not a football fan, nor do I understand much about the game, but I am intelligent enough to see the American contradiction around religion is kicking us in the pants. Your characterization of the national scene, "... We live in a post-Christian, narcissistic petri dish..." and that Tim Tebow has become pariah..." And now, as you say, "... the squeaky-clean Boy Scout is now a national pariah!" points to the weakness growing into a national phenomenon: blindness.

It is fine to question and wrestle with a belief system, Christianity, and arrive at the conclusion you do not want to be a part of that system, but the fundamental structure of American culture is Puritan, and it governs behavior and practice in our society! So, I question the silent claims of superiority held by many 'enlightened folks' (myself included) because our transitions are incomplete. What is replaced is just as important a choice as the serpent shedding his skin to renew himself.

Nationally Christianity, I believe, has not been rejected at the level the popular press is fond of prematurely claiming. Many of those hurt, and challenged by the rigors of fundamentalism are now in major positions to cast judgements upon moral stability in the lives of people they employ, and people who hold themselves, not others, to higher standards. Unexamined belief is just as deadly as unexamined unbelief. In fact, angry and unexamined unbelief leads to the same behavior and intolerance as the religious practices one walked away from as a thinking feeling adult.
