Do You Like Who You Are?

There was a really powerful scene on The Young And Restless not long ago. The character Devon was talking about his turbulent relationship with his wife, Hilary to his Dad, Neil. She lied, schemed, and manipulated him throughout their marriage. He described her as toxic. This scene followed after Devon was released from the hospital, recuperating from a major car accident, an accident that was the result of an argument with Hilary. The argument enraged him to the point of driving recklessly on an icy road with no regard to his safety or to anyone else’s.

In his script, a few thing he said really struck a chord with me. For instance, “I gave so many second chances I’ve lost count.” But he continued, “That’s not who I am, I don’t do stuff like that. That’s not me…My relationship with her has been destroying this family and me since the beginning. I wake up, I look in the mirror, I don’t even like the person I’ve become. I shouldn’t feel like that, that’s not OK. this has to end.” The really sad and unfortunate thing is that even though Devon and Hilary are fictitious characters, his situation is probably very real to many people. The feeling is obvious when you’ve begun to lose yourself. Acknowledge it as instinct or your intuition. So, my question to you is, do you like who you are in your relationship?

Hopefully, the answer to this question is yes. Yes to knowing your worth and the value you bring to a relationship. So, if you find yourself dissatisfied and disappointed with yourself in a relationship, any relationship, be it with a sibling, coworker, friend or even a parent and you find that you’re making regretful decisions because of their influence, then maybe it’s time to examine why.


Do this – look inward and be honest. Are you going along just to get along ignoring every red flag that’s chipping away at your self-identity? Are you someone who can’t say no to drama and wretchedness? Recognize the red flags because ignoring them won’t make them go away. As a matter of fact, they’ll get worse as time goes on.

I encourage you to be fearless enough to make sound reasonable decisions for your own well being. After all, what is your reward for being influenced by an individual? Be free from toxicity and learn to say no to losing yourself in your relationships. Of course, in the scenario above, Devon and Hilary were married. And despite statistics, it’s not that easy to escape a toxic marriage. Counseling may be recommended.

Kimberly, what a powerfully written piece. It isn't by accident, I believe, the script writers dig in deep and write from powerful insights into the human condition because one who is living cannot help it. The words Devon said in the Young & the Restless speaks to and of and about a keen warrior awakened. The misconception of what a warrior's way is, who a warrior is, and what a warrior can and cannot do is based upon belief in the fantasy of storytellers in the mediums of television, radio in the old days, and the movies we watch.

The retelling of how one group of Americans want the world to be has changed the truth into something else and convinced countless people they have no power, or place, or cannot ever be positioned into a place of power. I dig the style of a woman capable of living to tell the story of over-powering the illusions one can live with. Telling the story of the escape? Well, each of us should have that pleasure in the aftermath of struggle to victory.

True Power

There is much confusion by many on what power truly is. Grandson remember the words that I am going to speak to you, and teach them to the next generation.

Many believe that power can be bought, sold, or traded. Many believe that being powerful is to be the strongest in number, or the greatest warrior. Some believe that being powerful is being the leader of others, or to have influence over others wills and beliefs.

True power is all around us, yet many do not recognize, or honor it. Power is held within the brilliance of grandfather sun, whose light shines endlessly. Power is within grandmother moon who influences the cycles of the ocean, all females, and the fertility of mother earth. It is the whispering mystery of a gentle breeze. The crashing sounds of the thunder beings as they create rain. It is the remembering and honoring of all our relations, and walking the red road.

True power is the heartbeat that connects all of us on mother earth past, present, and future. It is found in our prayers, visions, and in the dreamtime. These are the true powers that many men choose not to speak of.

What you tell yourself has a way of manifesting itself. Let me say it another way. What people call you is a reflection of how they see you and value your worth (Oops, I said something). Words have meaning and because words have meaning, I challenge you to use them for uplifting and not tearing down. Don't let people cause you to degrade yourself and/or others for the benefit of profit and fame. With so much talk about free speech, let's get one thing clear - derogatory speech against Jews, Gays and Lesbians, as well as Latinos is consider hate speech, but use the 'N' word and it's either free speech or I'm sorry I said it and and got caught speech.

The writer of Proverbs penned the words, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Please don't miss this. Be careful of what you say because it has consequences. In addition to this, love yourself as well as others enough to not allow anyone to degrade or demean you with words. Oh, I have to say this. Just as we don't want anyone labeling us and mistreating us, we cannot do it to one another.

It occurs within and without the churches they may attend. But, unlike any group I know of, save the Dalid people of India's caste system, give everyone the power to call them by the name that enslaves their spirit. American Blacks it's nigger. Do I Need a Title?

There is a rumble in a story I am going to tell beneath the surface.

Black Americans, I believe, fail their children because parents place their full trust in a system designed for their children's demise. Black people 'adore' white American's contempt. If it were not true the obvious things to protect and develop their children would be done automatically.

Abandoning our children is a deep and conscious decision made daily. Not plunging into why the system of thought about education exists is abnegation of duty. Or maybe Black Americans are lazy. There are other systems of education that fit our children that is not resistant to creativity and is resistant to social engineering. There are other battles to fight within these schools, but it is better to fight those fights with a sense of knowing the control has shifted in your favor. And then there is control. I don't believe, and I am not convinced Blacks are finished with their assigned role of subjugation.

Maybe, Blacks are waiting to be saved, or simply enjoy complaining. The onus is on us to grab the reins of the horse running amok and bring him to a halt. The reins physically control the horse's movement, but the horse studies the rider's soul, and emotions. His determination of the substance of strength or weakness in the rider supports his compliance, or rebellion. Riders know this. It is why some healers use horses to mediate the healing and balancing of disruption, disorder, psychic pain, and trauma in a wide variety of people. Water mediates and tempers the soul, balances fire's propensity to destroy by directing the heat to heal when needed. Understanding the elements are the genius of indigenous cultures. Education, at the level it is, in modern life is not based upon the structures of living in the world as co-creators, and caretakers, or nurturers. It is based on something insidious.   

What would the American education system look like if Black Americans, en masse, moved away from their norm and rode horses instead of walking mules on acreage they don't own? What would change in the social environment if Black people shifted from the slave/mastery mentality into the difficult waters of self-sufficiency, if they trained their own children's spirits?

At the core of the controversy about education is one unanswered question many white people on both ends of the spectrum ask of each other, but avoid asking Black parents: "If Black lives mattered would Colored folks be so dependent upon white's control over their lives?"

Fear has a way of disguising itself so that it appears bigger than faith. In my preacher's voice, 'the devil is a liar.' Faith is more powerful than fear. It's your faith that will open up doors for you to walk through. In a real sense, through faith in God, you are able to do and see the impossible become possible. Let me remind you of some things: It was faith that helped you in your time of need. It was faith that allowed certain blessings to come your way that you weren't even expecting. It was faith that saved you and delivered you. And it was faith that elevated you above your distractions and distractors.

The Bible says, "For God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Please don't miss this. Fear is from the enemy, while faith is from God. Remember, fear will keep you locked up while faith has the ability to free you up. The choice is yours. Do you want to be incarcerated by the spirit of fear or do you want to soar with your faith? Oh, I need to drop this important note. Fear seeks out excuses for why things can't and/or won't happen. As I close this message, I urge you to operate under faith and trust in God with everything. 6.24.14

In this spiritual journey, you must understand that you have power on the inside that's greater than any negative influence on the outside. You need to know that setbacks will arise in your life in order to take your attention off what you were meant to become and shift your attention on what you can't become. The good news is that God loves you so much that He can take what was meant to destroy you and use it to elevate you. All you need to do is decide that you won't settle for settling. It's not too late. Set your mind on accomplishing your goal and work towards it daily. The only thing stopping you is YOU. God is ready to elevate you but you must have enough faith in Him to trust Him.

ICE-T ABOUT MANHOOD

Last year in 2014 in January Ice-T's tweet stirred the thoughts of many and went right to the heart of the story of American manhood: " FYI: That's why my new Body Count LP is titled MANSLAUGHTER. It's about the death of Manhood. Real men are an endangered species."

There has been an assault against men and masculinity in century twenty and for good solid reasons. We had to take it because it deserved the cross examination. We are talking about Western thought. As an Indian and an African man our sense of manhood and masculinity was forced into this paradigm so under the glare of American women there was no differentiation. But, in the 21st century the diatribe has turned ugly and truth to change conditions is now an ugly assault for the sake of an assault to undermine the natural occurrences of the alpha male. Starting with little boys it is brutal and ugly. Nature is not going to stop creating us. But, the political rise of the Gay Movement is spearheading the feminizing of the male for consumption by anger, fear, rage, intimidation, and a sense of righteousness that is dismissive of natural processes.

The rapper, Ice T, is a crude and direct cat straight out of the projects. His fame gave him face to the place he came from and with the responsibility of fame and accomplishment he has a 'ride or die' mentality that keeps him fearless in his purposes. In his analysis he says gay men are not to blame for the “pussyfication” of the male sex.

“I think right now you’re dealing with the pussyfication of the male sex. Men are just being so passive, not standing for something; they’re very politically correct." He continued saying,

“This has nothing to do with the gay male. The gay male is gay and I have no problem with that. Men are just soft. It’s OK to say you want to be a woman, but try to be a man and there’s something wrong with that.”

He explained: ”One of my buddies told me, ‘For you to be a man, a bitch has definitely taken a position.’ If you’re with your girl and you’re like, ‘Where should we park? I don’t know…’, she’ll be like, ‘Park here!’

Deep in his manhood, like the rest of us, is our sense of our responsibilities as a father. Ice T as many of us do has a theme running through his parenting style that is far outside the thin and timid narratives popular culture is demanding men place upon their necks as yokes. To those with ears he said and I understand this knowing: ”My son grew up with people smoking weed and drinking, right in his face. All I could do was say, ‘There’s an adult world and a kid world. You live in a kid world. Adults can say that, you can’t. You can say other shit once you can drive!"

Men, real men, are not to be dictated to by feminine men or by women who know not themselves. There is no wisdom in that and we don't and will never respect it because of the foolish nature of their projections. Our responsibilities to protect are from hard places with gentle reasons that evolve from the truth love inspires in actions to know our nature and to operate naturally as we play our role creating sacred and safe space for our families and ideally our communities. It is the edge and the soul of masculinity to resist docility and listen with restraint when necessary and to kill what is within us that works against our lives. If not for the killing by evil men we would not have to take on the hard task of protecting ourselves and the People with force. A soft girly man needs protection too, but does not have the right or the power to determine masculinity or undermine the strength and imagination of boys. For that he could die in any of the ways a man could die for that crime.

Women are becoming a puzzle speaking against what they need in men. Many women cling to their girly-men to the derision of their sons and the put down of their daughter's need to fathom the sacredness of their femininity. Ice T, as I pointed out earlier, is a basic type of cat. He once pointed out a gross contradiction with clarity:

”Women want power. But at the same time they’ve made men feel uncomfortable about speaking their feelings.”
