Wild Life

There is a sense within American youth to aspire to a wild life loosely defined by excessive drinking, hooping and hollering, movies, videos, drugs, long and wild parties, and a generally practiced detachment mistaken for cool. Unbridled passion often leads to regret, and young people engrossed in music that gives free expression to wanton behavior, anger, and crude calculated destruction are particularly at risk of deep troubles in their short lives. 

I am old enough to have a sense of the effect of soldiers returning home from World War II. It mostly comes from my teenage years suddenly wondering why I was watching James Dean, and Elvis movies with the rebellious white punks with the slick hair styles. My parents would have not gone for any of that behavior in me, but subtly these guys were become models. 

After World War II white soldiers came back home with a restlessness that transferred into the motorcycle gangs that eventually, and quickly turned into rebel gangs.The restlessness and the way white soldiers dealt with the stress of war sickness was different with Black soldiers because of race, and the social climate it engineered for them. The characters James Dean, Elvis and others came out of that era, that angst, and struggle to connect with themselves and society. Connecting with self, and society was deliberately harder, and more dangerous for Black men, in particular, and Black people over all. 

Today those are subtle, less obvious influences on children because of the newness they feel alive and fresh from their mother's wet wombs. The 1960's unleashed genius upon the planet in a way that very well may never be duplicated in the world again. There are unique factors to the charge of energies that shaped the youth from the late 1950's through to the1970's that created a mass introduction of ingenious ideas, and approaches to every academic discipline, and socially restructured a rigid environments for young people's exploration.  In turn those young hippies and revolutionaries are now adults, and grandparents. A ball or two was dropped, and the parents carrying the ball now are absorbed in attendant fears, obsessions, and distractions that have little, but mostly nothing to do with the development of the creativity within their children. A return to the rigid social and family structures that were blind to their contradictions is a visit back to the 1940's and '50's without apologies or introspective conversations. 

I don't know who suffers the most in these games of partying like it's 1999, as Prince used to sing, the women, or the men? Women are often depicted in popular movies badly. They are drunk, or made drunk to be fondled, and taken advantage of, or they are bad ass chicks who kill and take without regret, or remorse, or they are the lovable Thelma & Louise types, or merely sex kittens. The boys and the men pretend to be, or are often violent. Women, to them, are second rate beneath their male friends who they romp around with breaking the law, and seducing women under the thin guise of badly insinuated romance that is contemptuous. 

Seeing women flagging their precious selves like wet rags or flags in the wind to get attention, to give up their pussy for pleasure, money or acceptance is painful to behold. I use the word behold on purpose. It is important to convey the enormity of what is being bartered away for cheap thrills and short rides. The boys and men in this game need to receive the ability to see through their daughter's eyes, and women need to learn how to see themselves their daughter's eyes and the perception of divinity. should be sought after, if they want to be perceived as men women need to trust.Women need to be Known by men in a way unknown to most men on this path. FLAPPERS

In the 1920's, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper.

The term "flapper" first appeared in Great Britain after World War I. It was there used to describe young girls, still somewhat awkward in movement who had not yet entered womanhood.

Many have tried to define flappers. In William and Mary Morris' Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins, they state, "In America, a flapper has always been a giddy, attractive and slightly unconventional young thing who, in 'was a somewhat foolish girl, full of wild surmises and inclined to revolt against the precepts and admonitions of her elders. Flappers had both an image and an attitude.

The Flappers' image consisted of drastic - to some, shocking - changes in women's clothing and hair. Nearly every article of clothing was trimmed down and lightened in order to make movement easier.

It is said that girls "parked" their corsets when they were to go dancing. The new, energetic dances of the Jazz Age, required women to be able to move freely, something the "ironsides" didn't allow.

The hem of the skirts also started to rise in the 1920's. At first the hem only rose a few inches, but from 1925 to 1927 a flapper's skirt fell just below the knee.

:: FLAPPER ATTITUDE ::

The flapper attitude was characterized by stark truthfulness, fast living, and sexual behavior. Flappers seemed to cling to youth as if it were to leave them at any moment. They took risks and were reckless.

They wanted to be different, to announce their departure from the Gibson Girl's morals. So they smoked. Something only men had done previously. Their parents were shocked.

Smoking wasn't the most outrageous of the flapper's rebellious actions. Flappers drank alcohol. At a time when the United States had outlawed alcohol (Prohibition), young women were starting the habit early. Some even carried hip-flasks full so as to have it on hand.

More than a few adults didn't like to see tipsy young women. Flappers had a scandalous image as the "giddy flapper, rouged and clipped, careening in a drunken stupor to the lewd strains of a jazz quartet."

The 1920's was the Jazz Age and one of the most popular past-times for flappers was dancing. Dances such as the Charleston, Black Bottom, and the Shimmy were considered "wild" by older generations.

As described in the May 1920 edition of the Atlantic Monthly, flappers "trot like foxes, limp like lame ducks, one-step like cripples, and all to the barbaric yawp of strange instruments which transform the whole scene into a moving-picture of a fancy ball in bedlam."

For the Younger Generation, the dances fit their fast-paced life-style. For the first time since the train and the bicycle, a new form of faster transportation was becoming popular. Henry Ford's innovations were making the automobile an accessible commodity to the people. Cars were fast and risky - perfect for the flapper attitude. Flappers not only insisted on riding in them; they drove them.

Unfortunately for their parents, flappers didn't just use cars to ride in. The back seat became a popular location for the new popular sexual activity, petting.

Others hosted petting parties. Though their attire was modeled after little boys' outfits, flappers flaunted their sexuality. It was a radical change from their parents and grandparents' generations.

:: THE END OF FLAPPERHOOD ::

Though many were shocked by the flapper's skimpy attire and licentious behavior, a less extreme version of the flapper became respectable among the old and the young. Some women cut off their hair and stopped wearing their corsets, but didn't go to the extreme of flapperhood.

At the end of the 1920's, the stock market crashed and the world was plunged into the Great Depression. Frivolity and recklessness was forced to come to an end. However, much of the flapper's changes remained.

In the 1920's, flappers broke away from the Victorian image of womanhood. They dropped the corset, chopped their hair, dropped layers of clothing to increase ease of movement, wore make-up, created the concept of dating, and became a sexual person.
