Curlers

Back then 'wild women' didn't care about wearing curlers in public. They were in defiance against those (in their words) 'uppity chicks'!


Colored women in the 1960's when this picture was probably taken were varied, but one common thing was dignity. Negro women of each social station cringed against the indignity of white folk's typical description of Colored folk and both men and women had standards of dress and carriage to ride against the tide of the day. Although, curlers were seen in public the most defiant woman was the one walking the streets in curlers. They wore their hurt different from other Colored women.
