“Just don't give up on trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong.” – ella Fitzgerald
President-elect Obama has bought to light what we hide. I am hearing in the African-American community discussions, not mere talk, about finance, development, self-evaluation, and intelligent visits into history. We are re-thinking, in my world, finance and coming to terms with our unsophisticated naive approach to money. We are the first generation to have the right to know and demand to see our credit scores, and millions of Americans are subtly schooled to be in debt craving what they don't need and spending more than they make and borrowing to make ends meet. This is the very definition of poverty, and a root within our contradictions.
Women have recently been given, by law, the rights to ownership of body, and access to creating wealth and its tools. American Indians recently were allowed to practice our own religions; and travel, rock-n-roll, and limited access to the Spirit, and Truth has encouraged Christians to expand their view of God, their understanding of the real worlds of other religious lives. Women and the Gay community are finding the power to protect themselves in a world dominated by the violent impulses of misogyny and heterosexual drives to dominate the 'weak'.
These are exciting and demanding times we have lived to experience and be a part of but, it is a responsibility we have, not a spectator event. The 2008 election changed the energy of the population in the Washington DC metro area from heaviness, shading true feelings, fear and the shadow of fascism hovering above us into one of friendlier smiles, less couching of words, and a general good feeling felt in the silence of subway rides, casual conversations started in public, or the slightest gestures made to connect with another human being. We are all thinking and introspective. – Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories (Nov. 13, 2008)
