When the Pope was visiting Washington DC my evening was with a small group Black Indians. We were in a mosque on Pennsylvania Avenue meeting about the upcoming anniversary of the Million Man March coming up on the 10th of October. Someone asked about thoughts on the Pope's visit. Silence fell on the People. Finally, a friend of mine from Cameroon said, "The Pope? You mean the one who blessed the slave ships? Who said we were not people and agreed the Doctrine of Discovery was enough?"
We all fell out laughing and that was the end of the discussion about the Pope. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories (Oct. 6, 2015)
