For dialogue a twist

"Look in a woman's eyes." Daddy instructed me when I was a boy of 15. The reasoning was sound.

Today's young man has a twist to his thinking contrary to the established patterns. Their maneuvering around identity, sexual identity is unique in large part because society, in general and many of their parents in particular, didn't give the children an analytical approach to the subject, or immerse them in historical approaches, or delve into the depths of subjects with their children. They simply placed them in the mix and worded their action with attitudes marked by cliches. I shouldn't say it is unique. It isn't as I think about it.

In 1990 my youngest brother, Michael, invited me to his school to share in his history class. "Bring your drum." he said. Michael was in the early years of his profession in a Quaker school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Abington Friends. I went intending to stay a day or two. I was there the whole week and gave 12 workshops in the auditorium. The dean at the time approached me one morning. Introducing herself with a firm handshake she said to me, "Whatever you are doing keep doing it. I haven't seen your show, but all of our misfits and whatnots are hooking class to see you, to be with you. Keep it up!"

I was stunned. As she walked away I asked Michael about it because I'd never intended to use my gifts to work with white kids. I wanted to work with Black children. This was expanding something within me. What was going on?

Michael said, "Gregory, remember in the 1960's and '70's when mostly white people were talking about not forcing the values their parents forced on them, the church and religion on their children, and why?"

"Yes."

"Well, these are their children. They are grasping, and reaching out and taking hold of the Gothic culture, drugs, sex, Satan worship, the occult. They are gravitating towards what you have. They don't have the foundation we grew up with, and without it they are in trouble and..."

Michael went on eloquently explaining the roots of an American phenomenon and export: rootlessness. Now in 2013 many of those children are parents, and they've passed on a broken lineage that is gaining acceptability, and leaving a trail of wreckage to the soul and the soil in ways too complex to unwrap here in this context. an Understanding QUEST

I don't think this subject was handled well. Some good points were made, but it slid down a slope the way it will tend to because the line of questioning on the subject comes from a defensive place on both sides of the questions about homosexuality. Adopted or forced into an African religion (Christianity) that appears not as itself, but as a Western European production, and a tool towards a nefarious end has changed the Book, and allowed Native people to forget the spirit of their traditions, and sever the relationship each collective of people (tribes) cherished with the Earth they found themselves living upon until the rigidity of law, and judgement replaced balance. 

Much favor leaned towards the Gay movement not over the right or the wrong of homosexuality, but on the merits of logic and law. Gay activists found out what Native leaders, who spoke for and fought for their People during the wars of the Americas, and what the African slaves, and freedom fighters eventually discovered, learned and employed. You could not appeal to the heart of the whites the way you could with your relatives. Most of the whites, it seemed to us, could not and did not become relatives, in their hearts, of the People. They were antagonistic, and were takers. The world did not look to them the way it looked to the People. Their eyes made it impossible to see the souls of the People, and understand where homosexuals in many (not all) of our tribes stood in our estimation. This discovery led to a readjustment of approach, and the social advancements of Red and Black movements were won on the merits of law, and logic at the highest level, the Supreme Court.

The Church has positioned itself in a dangerous position and relied on the advancement of time to ease the memories, and allow half truths to marinate in the thinking, and emotions of their followers. The Church does not and apparently cannot lead its followers to study what Jesus studied or know that Jesus was an initiated man, or how that came to be in place, and ignored by popular teaching. Conquerors used sex as a weapon. Rape and sodomy are two of the most damaging of tools employed in conquest, and the Church, the states of Europe, the Arabs employed these tactics. The spirit of the acts has run amok, and across the globe victims have been seeking validation from their churches and mosques and their synagogues and not been receiving it. They were judged, and judged harshly by the Books, the Holy Books. 

Beyond, and before the entrance of the Europeans, whom we love to blame for things, the communities of people seeking solace from these ravages found tiny respite with others like them, and apparently did the most natural of things. They built communities. They had to because we are all social creatures in need of each other. We like to touch. We have to touch soul to soul. We need each other, and need to be understood, felt, and seen!

The Church is not set up to validate at the Christ-level, yet. The spirituality required of people to balance these elements, and other unmentioned parts of this complex story is not part of Belief, and thus not part of significant parts of the Church, the Mosque, or the Synagogue! But this level of spirituality and power is integral to Knowing. There is a stark and distinct difference in the timbre of spirits within a person immersed in Belief and one immersed in Knowing. 

There are a few other things to bring into this equation, but I know from experience my last paragraph went too far away from what is considered Common Knowledge.

Women, NFL cheerleaders, & Entertainment

The thin shred of interest I could maintain watching a professional football game was in the half-time shows, and the brief attention the camera gave the cheerleaders. The marching bands and the cheer squads obviously worked hard to be on the grid, but at some point some narrow mind decided the game needed more men talking incessantly about the game, and the half time shows were cut. For me, it is mind numbing to hear endless talk about the statistics, and speculation. Apparently, I am in the minority. Ain't nothing to do about it so I don't watch the games. There are many other things to do, and thankfully there are a lot of things I am interested, like science, and lingerie football!

Yesterday's news talked about NFL cheerleaders. Wasn't much, but it share trivial information about the sport about their pay, for example. These women have careers and jobs. They could not live off the $75 to $150 a game. It is much more. There is a reality television show about life amongst the Dallas Cheerleaders. I watched about five episodes. Interesting. Why Is Playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s Lesbianism Still A Secret In 2008?

The ABC television movie “A Raisin In The Sun” will be broadcast on February 25th 2008 at 8:00pm. The television film fulfills the black quota for “black history month”. Pop star Sean Combs is the protagonist Walter Lee Younger. The title of the movie refers to black gay poet Langston Hughes poem “Harlem”.

African American lesbian playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s legendary play once again will be brought back to television to reach a new generation next week. Hansberry was the first black lesbian playwright to have a play produced on Broadway in 1959. “A Raisin In the Sun” was a huge success for Hansberry and launched her career.

The general public of course does not know that Lorraine Hansberry was a lesbian due to homophobia. Why is black lesbianism considered “private” yet “heterosexuality” is a part of the public domain? Although Hansberry married a white Jewish man Robert Nemiroff in 1953 the couple separated in 1957 and divorced in 1964.Hansberry was conscious of her lesbian identity and she negotiated between the public and private spheres. Black lesbians encountered racism from the mainstream, white gay culture, and also persecution from heterosexual blacks.

Lorraine Hansberry’s lesbian identity emerges from the articles she wrote for the lesbian publication “The Ladder” in the late 1950s. Hansberry did not use her full name when she wrote articles for “The Ladder” she used her initials L.H. instead. In the 1950s in America gays and lesbians lived in fear due to witch hunts against homosexuals. Black lesbian women encountered a triple form of oppression in relation to their race, gender, and sexual orientation.

Can you imagine the difficulties black lesbians endured in the 1950s? Homosexuality was still considered a mental illness that can be cured. The topic of human sexuality was still taboo in the 1950s. America was sexually repressed due to heterosexual male domination and male supremacy. The racial and sexual apartheid existed in the United States and black lesbians lived in constant danger due to racism, sexism and homophobia. The civil rights and gay movements did not gather strength until the 1960s.

Black lesbians encountered racism from white lesbians and were barred from entering white lesbian bars and establishments during the 1950s. Black lesbians also endured gender discrimination due to being women and unwanted sexual advances of dangerous, violent, and hostile heterosexual men.

Hansberry was indeed a lesbian but this important component of black queer history should not be erased by the homophobic Occidental world. Heterosexual black publications always ignore the important fact Hansberry was a lesbian. I didn’t know Lorraine Hansberry was a lesbian until I read lesbian activist, feminist, poet, and writer Adrienne Rich’s incisive essay “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence”. Rich’s analysis is correct society attempts to erase, diminish, and destroy the contributions of lesbians in many ways. I believe the silence about Lorraine Hansberry’s lesbianism is due to the negative attitude that still exists against homosexuals.

Why is the term lesbianism treated like a scatological word? One argument is some straights believe “it doesn’t matter” and if people discover that Lorraine Hansberry was a black lesbian it might “scare people off” from watching the movie. Why is there this invisible code and this silent barrier? If black lesbian emancipation is to occur why is black lesbianism still a social taboo? Society appears to have a love and hate relationship with lesbianism.

The political, cultural, social, and artistic merits of black lesbians such as Lorraine Hansberry must be celebrated and not treated as some shameful abhorrent secret. It is the year 2008 so why are we still reticent? Why hasn’t this final chasm been shattered and the truth still shrouded in silence? Lorraine Hansberry proves that black gay people care about the black community. Often heterosexual blacks believe black gays and lesbians only focus on sexual orientation and ignore race. Lorraine Hansberry proves through art that she was cognizant of the racial, social and political polemics blacks endured during the civil rights era. “A Raisin In The Sun” is about a fictional family struggling to survive in 1950s Chicago at a time when America’s social and racial apartheid was at full strength...

Hating lesbians tells a listener, a child a story about you. Men are responsible for the safety of our women. We have to protect them from our beliefs that engineer their defensive strategies against our beliefs around our right to pussy, our man sense of entitlement over a woman. Our very contradictions come to the surface around lesbians. Lesbians call our shit out on the table.
