an ELDER'S teaching

In November of 2007 Pam Tinker and I had the privilege of receiving  and hosting Rainbow Eagle and his wife to Wolf Run for a week of teaching. The Muskogee (Creek) Elder, Bear Heart was to be featured but was dying in his home. He sent Rainbow Eagle, an Okla-Choctaw man whom Bear Heart had taught and passed on the ancient responsibility of being the Keeper of the Peace Shield.

Rainbow Eagle held all of us captive unfolding many things about these prophecies, and unique to his scholarship he showed us the connections of Christian history and theology to these indigenous teachings, and the prophecies in anticipation of the new cycles approaching in 2012. There were many things shared, and many insights enlightened our understandings. New Medicines were exchanged. Understanding relationships broadened the discussions, and through it all I took copious notes, and buried a lot within my heart the way Mary hid the prophetic words of the angels who spoke of her son to come in the world as a Messiah.

One of the simple things he said I will share.  "Elders say, 'learn to say thank you. Learn from all experiences, develop respect for all Life."

It is so simple these words, the teaching.

WATER MYSTERIES

"At the end of every discussion about pollution, the environment, politics, religion, etc. how one treats Water tells the truth about one's religion." - Pam Tinker

Native woman arms outstretched

prayers
Seven is the sacred number of the Cherokee. The seven sacred directions are East, South, West, North, all above, all below, and where you now stand in the center. The seven sacred clans are the Deer, Wolf, Paint, Blue, Bird, Wild Potato, and Long Hair (or Twister). Each had an important responsibility within each village.

Wolf-Keepers of the wolf and War Chiefs, wore red,
Bird- Keepers of the birds; had hunting birds they were messengers.
Blue-Keepers of the blue medicine to keep the children well
Paint-Make red paint; used crystals; medicine men and women
Wild Potato (later Bear) - Farmers, made bread from wild potato
Deer-keepers of the deer; fast runners and hunters

I pulled out my Cherokee shield pin and will describe it to you. There is a yellow star shaped flower in the center then circle of blue with leaves etched in gold, then a circle of red within the words "Seal of the Cherokee Nation" in English and in Cherokee then an outer ring of green. In Ireland goddess tradition, three represented the Maiden, Mother and Crone and the other trio was Body, Mind and Spirit. You have chosen the two numbers most sacred to your heritage (I am of course assuming that there is some Cherokee in there somewhere). ~ Pam Tinker, Eastern band Cherokee nation (Wolf Clan), Irish & friend

EARTH MEDICINE is the same as yesterday

“Going back to the Earth can't happen without guidance. It has become a cliché. Going back to Mother Earth is unrealistic to a people who are mere spectators. Meteorologists rely on machines to predict weather and the habit of touching the Earth, and her forces is antiquated in the modern mind. The times are requiring a new medicine; an approach that somehow balances the demands of living, and being present with the sacred elements that hold worlds together.

These are my words. Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories”
