On the surface American Christians sound 'right' and justified vilifying Arabs, and those against Israel because of the Bible, and what is said in the Bible. It all incites self-righteous attitudes dipping its adherents towards a dogma, with a notion of supremacy over reasonable objections to the stance made by those in the so-called Army of the Lord.

Millions of American Christians cannot stray, with confidence, from the controversial reasons for saying, 'yea' to all aggression from Israel towards any perceived threat, or country against them; even if Israel started the misuse of power. The prophecies and stories in the Old Testament support the notion of 'right thinking' on this subject; meaning God is behind Israel and the Israelites are his chosen. This is the core of American policy towards Israel. New Testament philosophy began with this understanding of Israel's place in the Christian practice in the West. Despite the fact the first century followers of Jesus, who were accepted by Rome purposely worked to remove themselves from the vestiges of the progenitor of their new faith; today's form of Christianity informs the need to kill and take. 

This is perplexing, isn't it? 

The serious American citizen needs to look deeply into the Torah, the first five (5) books of the Bible, to gain a footing in the theology that allows our government to not intervene on behalf of the Palestine people. The average Christian needs to look closely at these justifications for a higher purpose: healing of their own souls, and release from the evil to whom (we) are devoted. For the slaughter and the taste of it; American foreign policy aims at Arabs and the enemies of Israel missiles, and gives financial support. The Israeli apartheid system designed around Palestinians to protect the Jewish systems of thought, and its contradictions comforts Jim Crow. Why would white Americans change for peace to take precedence over their predilections?

It doesn't make sense.  

So one last question remains: "How did conservatism, business, American dictatorial patriotism, and Christianity meld into one ideology?" We all need that answer. Without the truth as an answer, as soul singer, Curtis Mayfield sang, "If there's a hell below, we all gonna go!"

Same Story: "She ain't dressed right!"

In an article written by Leeann Duggan "These "Inappropriate" Outfits Will Make You Scratch Your Head" she drew attention to a detail of young life each of the Abrahamic traditions have to address with each generation: proper dress.

Two things jump out consistently: one: dress codes are drawn up for women to adhere to, and two: women are directly tied to decency and social order in society. The third thing is hard. Men are allowed to not develop impeccability of spirit and discipline of heart over mind and our sex drives through initiation. It is not a surprise these reactions to women's dress.

One can remain on the surface of the subjects the issue irritates or go deeper and untie the Puritan ethic, which is fundamental to American culture. A better understanding of the roots make the tree more comprehensible. It is like a riddle, a puzzle to unravel, or leave on the table to clutter the process of cooking and what else needs to transpire in the kitchen. ~ Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories (6.19.16)

This week, Toronto students became the latest to push back against their school's restrictive dress codes with their "Crop Top Day" protest. But, banning crop tops is just one example; over the past year, we've seen a spike in women and girls getting in trouble for wearing all kinds of clothing — clothing that wouldn't elicit freak-outs from most sane people.

There was the school that allowed backless dresses, but kicked a student out of prom for wearing one. The 5-year-old girl whose teacher made her cover up a simple sundress. The woman who wasn't allowed to wear pants to prom (because it's 1915?). And, these are just the tip of the iceberg. Ahead, we show seven times when school dress codes went way too far.

Students at Toronto's Etobicoke School of the Arts declared Tuesday "Crop Top Day" in solidarity with student Alexi Halket, who was sent to the principal's office when her sports-bra-like crop top offended a teacher.

Halket said she chose the top because she wanted to feel beautiful and confident, and that "[the school was] sexualizing my outfit." To his credit, the school principal, Rob MacKinnon, seemed to take the protest seriously; he met with 200 students to discuss the issue: "[It's not about] sexualizing students or objectifying them, but what's okay in school," he said.

The school's dress code does not explicitly ban crop tops, and school officials are not changing that for now. In the meantime, Halket maintains that she should be able to wear "whatever makes [her] comfortable," while principal MacKinnon praised students for standing up for their beliefs: "I'm very proud of them for talking about what they value."

In April, a teacher ordered Michigan high school student Mireya Briceno to leave her prom because her dress was "too revealing" and "violated dress code." Apparently, the teacher had not read the school's prom dress code, which specifically permitted backless dresses. Despite Briceno's protests, she was still forced to leave her dance.

Briceno's mother demanded, but did not receive, an apology from the school for the incident, and Briceno vowed to wear the same dress to her boyfriend's prom later that year.

Pennsylvania student Alexus Miller-Wigfall was given a suspension after her prom dress was deemed "too revealing" of her cleavage. This was despite the fact that Miller-Wigfall had previously submitted a photo of the dress to her school for approval — now a requirement at many schools for female students (tuxes are curiously not subject to pre-approval).

Miller-Wigfall's mother believed that, since other students wore "more revealing" dresses without consequence, her daughter was actually being punished for being plus-size. A similar incident occurred with Washington student Brittany Minder in 2013. This raises an important point: For women with large chests, cleavage is kind of inevitable. Isn't banning it inherently sizeist?

Not even toddlers are exempt from body policing. In April, when Houston-based writer Jef Rouner picked up his 5-year-old daughter from school, he was surprised to find a teacher had made her wear a T-shirt over the full-length, rainbow sundress shown here. The reason? The little girl's bare shoulders violated the school's dress code.

Rouner clapped back at the incident in a post on Houston Press titled "The Apparently Immoral Shoulders Of My Five-Year-Old Daughter." It masterfully deconstructs the sexism inherent in dress codes that — as so many do — include a myriad of restrictions on women's dress, but absolutely none on men's.

"Make no mistake," he wrote, "Every school dress code that is not a set uniform is about policing girls and girls alone." Amen.

The flip side of policing female bodies is punishing women who don't dress "feminine enough." North Carolina high school senior Shafer Rupard experienced this firsthand, when she showed up to her senior prom in the jazzy ensemble shown here, only to be told by a teacher that her red pants were unacceptable and she needed to leave.

Rupard rightfully thought the decision was ridiculous, especially given the fact that her school's prom Code of Conduct did not include a dress code at all (in case it wasn't clear that many of these incidents came down to teachers' whims).

Rupard eventually received an apology from her school and a refund of her prom ticket. A pyrrhic victory given her night was already ruined, but better than nothing.

In a truly head-scratching incident, Utah high schooler Gabi Finalyson was denied entrance to her school dance in January, unless she wore a sweater to cover her "bare shoulders." Call us crazy, but we're pretty sure her shoulders....aren't bare.

In fact, Finalyson's dress did adhere to the school’s “2-inch minimum shoulder strap” rule. What this dress bares are Gabi's arms; maybe that teacher needs a refresher in anatomy.

Finalyson's mother wondered if this incredibly strict interpretation was about imposing Mormon dress codes on students. "Let's stop this insanity," she wrote. "Girls' bodies are not sexual objects, and religious perspectives should not be imposed at a public school.”

Proving that equal rights for women is still a controversial concept in some parts of the country, Sophie, an 8th grader at Clermont Northeastern Middle School in Ohio, was surprised to find that her homemade "Feminist" T-shirt was crudely Photoshopped out of her class picture. The school's official story was that they did so because the tee was "unflattering," and claimed that they had informed Sophie's mom of the censorship. But, her mother claimed no knowledge of the incident.

Luckily, Sophie's fellow students saw through the school's questionable judgement and subsequent squirrelly behavior, coming to her support with proud social media declarations of their feminism, bolstered by the hashtag #IDeserveFreedomOfExpression. Refer to this story anytime you need to restore your faith in the youths.

The Paradox of the First President

read a New York Magazine article titled “The Paradox of the First Black President"

There is a photo by Pete Souza, the White House’s canny and peripatetic photographer, that surfaces from time to time online. The setting is Marine One, and it features a modest cast of five. Valerie Jarrett, dressed in a suit of blazing pink, is staring at her cell phone. Barack Obama, twisted around in his seat, is listening to a conversation between his then–body guy, Reggie Love, and Patrick Gaspard, one of his then–top advisers. Obama’s former deputy press secretary, Bill Burton, is looking on too, with just the mildest hint of a grin on his face.

In many ways, it’s a banal shot — just another photo for the White House Instagram feed, showing the president and his aides busily attending to matters of state. Stare at it a second longer, though, and a subtle distinction comes into focus: Everyone onboard is black. “We joked that it was Soul Plane,” says Burton. “And we’ve often joked about it since — that it was the first time in history only black people were on that helicopter.”

Souza snapped that shot on August 9, 2010, but it didn’t make any prominent appearances in the mainstream press until mid-2012, when it appeared in The New York Times Magazine. The following summer, July 2013, the president had a group of civil-rights leaders come visit him in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, and the optics, as they like to say in politics, were similar: An all-star cast of minorities (African-American and Latino this time) gathered in a historic place to which the barriers to entry were once insuperably high.

But this was not a meeting the participants laughed about afterward. When Obama opened up the floor, everyone spoke about what they’d witnessed in the 2012 election: how states that limited voter-registration drives and early-voting initiatives had left many African-Americans off the rolls; how strict new laws concerning IDs had prevented many minorities from voting and created hours-long lines at the polls. The answer was clear: legislation to restore the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court had just overturned a key provision of the landmark civil-rights legislation the month before.
But Obama’s response was equally clear: Nothing could be done. Not in this political climate, not under these circumstances. Congress would never allow it.


The group was stunned. As they’d stumped for Obama, one of the many talking points they’d used to turn out the black vote was the threat of disenfranchisement, the possibility that the Voting Rights Act was in jeopardy. Yet here was Obama telling them that a bill addressing this vital issue didn’t stand a chance.

These proximal events — the publication of a historic photo in a major news outlet, a demoralizing discussion about the prospects of amending our voting laws — may seem unrelated. But to many who’ve watched this White House for the last six and three-quarter years, particularly with an eye toward race, the two events are finely intertwined. They would more likely say: One cannot have that photo without a massive reaction to that photo. In a country whose basic genetic blueprint includes the same crooked mutations that made slavery and Jim Crow possible, it is not possible to have a black president surrounded by black aides on Marine One without paying a price. And the price that Obama has had to pay — and, more important, that African-Americans have had to pay — is one of caution, moderation, and at times compromised policies: The first black president could do only so much, and say only so much, on behalf of other African-Americans. This is a sultry woman. Is Rihanna seductive clothed in a black fashionable version of modesty, or to American taste humble of attire in front of the mosque? In this controversy the administration of the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi felt her body beneath the cloth and the way she used her body was too much for the sanctity of the grounds, their tradition, and the environment of prayer and reverence common to sacred space. 

It is very hard for millions of Americans to understand how religion fits into the fabric of the Arab world. The Europeans and the Americans by definition of  their law and bullying, and missionaries spent 500 years ripping this ideological merge of elements out of the cultures of the indigenous peoples of the North American continent. Knowing that it is no wonder a Rihanna and a creative crew would miss the nuances of worship and reverence, custom, and politics Arabs practice and have a fashion shoot in a holy place. 

In practice, Americans do not hold land sacred. To other peoples in the world that is a dangerous spirit. A people who would invade the holy land of their proclaimed religion without reserve, or regret is an incomprehensible creature. With the same horror the Apaches felt watching the Spanish/Mexican sheep herders copulating with their sheep millions of Arabs were horrified watching American bomb the cities of Iraq, where the Garden of Eden once existed for Adam and Eve. With that as a backdrop here comes Rihanna.

Just a few minutes ago going through one of our local reporter's Facebook page (Jamie Sullivan) the picture of the rioting in Baltimore, Maryland caused me to pause and read the comments. One of the first reactions jumped out at me.

"Kill Obama?" was my response. "What kind of mind and spirit do you have? It is also a felony in these times to threaten the President. And anyway it wouldn't. Your suggestion is stupid. It doesn't have a logical path leading to or from common sense, or glimpse a solution to a complex problem, which is not only in Baltimore, but in cities across the country. The depth of your contradictions borders between ignorance & giddy racism buoyed by how little your ability to make significant historical connections stays afloat.

You went to Crispus Attucks high school. Crispus Attucks was an Natick Indian, whose father was an African. You rant against a Black president, but you learned nothing about the deep links between the freedoms you enjoy and the relationship of the Africans and the Native Americans with the Europeans. Crispus Attucks was the first to die in the Revolutionary War, man! Didn't you know that influence on your life?" 

 

The desire to kill the President amongst many white Americans is alive and well, and feels like it is tolerated alongside the KKK's right to free speech is protected by the Constitution and the Klan's supporters in high places. My civic duty is to turn his threat to the Secret Service. Should I?

If Congress doesn't act before February 27, the Department of Homeland Security is going to run out of money and go into a partial shutdown. (Eighty-five percent of employees would still be working, but they wouldn't be getting paid.) Congress doesn't appear to have a plan for action; as of last week, before it broke for recess, House and Senate lawmakers were each telling each other to do something. Meanwhile, politicians in both parties have already skipped to the step where they blame the other party for the possible shutdown — making them seem pretty resigned to it happening. House Speaker John Boehner said on Sunday he's "certainly" ready for a DHS shutdown.

BEN CARSON likens Islamic State to American Patriots


CORONADO, Calif. — Republican presidential prospect Ben Carson on Thursday compared the Islamic State group to American patriots willing to die for freedom.


In a speech to the Republican National Committee's winter meeting outside San Diego, the former neurosurgeon and conservative favorite praised American patriots for their willingness to give their lives for their beliefs. Then he mentioned the Islamic State group.


"They got the wrong philosophy, but they're willing to die for what they believe, while we are busily giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness," he said as Republican officials from across the country interrupted him with applause. "We have to change that."


Commonly known as ISIS, the Islamic State group has been responsible for hundreds of deaths across the Middle East in recent months. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for recent beheadings of Western journalists and aid workers. One of the suspects in the recent Paris terror attacks claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

A Republican National Committee spokesman had no immediate response when asked to comment on Carson's remarks, which came as part of a 35-minute luncheon address.
After the speech, Carson said it's "ridiculous" to suggest he was likening American patriots to the Islamic State.

Carson has drawn criticism for other comparisons. In his speech Thursday, he dismissed such reaction as politically motivated attacks by opponents. He also referred to recent accusations that he had plagiarized sections of a book, telling Republicans that he had "missed a couple" of citations and taking full responsibility for that.

Last spring Carson called the scandal over patient care at veterans hospitals "a gift from God to show us what happens when you take layers and layers of bureaucracy and place them between the patients and the health care provider." In 2013 he called the Affordable Care Act "the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery," adding that "it is slavery in a way because it is making all of us subservient to the government."

Carson is popular among conservatives across the country, and some have launched a national draft effort encouraging him to run for president. The only high-profile African-American considering a White House bid, he remains little known among much of the Republican establishment.
He said Thursday that he wasn't in a rush to announce his 2016 plans.
"I don't see the urgency," he said. "Let everybody else get in if they feel urgent, but I would have a tendency to do things the way they feel right to me."

Slaying a Herd of Sacred Cows

The patterns, the structures that set the beliefs that conduct action from particular mindsets is more important to change than the definitive terms conservative or liberal. To preserve old traditions or be free. That is a better view of the energies that govern lawmakers, and the public, and say, "I am a Republican, or I am a Democrat.".

We can go back and forth with this, but within the Republican party's mindset was and still is a deep resistance to the basic commitment to do the things necessary to insure better futures for the coming generations. Deep within the ranks of the conservative consciousness there is a dogged insistence to be consistent in our inconsistencies. 

During the Bush administration the country watched in horror as the Congress (both sides) allowed a weak president much despised prior to 9/11/01) free reign to do and spend what he wanted for the weakest of reasons. Taking the country from surplus to debt is a triumph, a coup? 

There is a fundamental flaw in the thinking of the Republican party that is steeped in the Old South. It is no secret, and it is heavily defended with the language of liberal (free) thinkers easily because of the miseducation of a growing number of graduates from American schools... - Gregory E. In the political circles I thought oogling over powerful white women in office, or on the political front was taboo babe watching as a sport! After all those white conservative folks are always talking about morality and family values implying that propriety is in order. The church tradition looks down upon women's sexuality is the message Church gave to many a person each Sunday; so in the bastion of the Bible Belt there is a monthly babe magazine and a distinction: Poli-Chick of the Week! On July 3, 2013, Senator Wendy Davis was the chick of the week and she is a single mother of two known for talking for 13 hours in pink tennis shoes about abortion and women's rights!

A few weeks ago girl watching with some very young men in my teaching style I pointed out a woman walking a stroller with a little one trying to keep up with her crossing the street. The boys were unable to look at her, and finally forced to exclaimed their horror, "She is a mother!" They couldn't see her, or admire how fine she was, or engage in a natural flow in conversation from observing beauty to any number of subjects beauty would lead a man to discuss.

It was the same when I was a little boy of 5, or 10. It was impossible to look at a pregnant woman and study what is before you in those days. No one ever told me this, as I recall, but it closed my eyes to the sight of Mommy being pregnant with each child after me and I am the oldest of five! Important aspects of women's existence are not of equal value with other mysterious things I guess because sex and sexuality still leave people saddled with guilt and shame. - Gregory E.
