Meghan Markle's seven tips for living a healthy, fit lifestyle

by Meghan Markle
December 29, 2016

Despite her busy schedule, Meghan Markle still finds time to live a healthy lifestyle. Whether she is on set in Toronto for Suits or jetting to London to be with boyfriend, Prince Harry, the actress lives by seven simple rules to maintain her fit and relaxed lifestyle.

Earlier this year, Meghan shared her seven health commandments with Women's Health Magazine and now they are here just in time for the new year.

Invest in yourself

"I give myself the luxury of downtime. We are all so incredibly busy and juggling so many things but I always take an hour to just decompress, watch mindless TV, snuggle with my dogs and enjoy a glass of wine. That's all part of the investment. It's a balance."

Stay motivated
"My health, my state of mind, the feeling you have after a workout; all of these things drive me to step onto my mat or go to the gym. Sometimes the idea of working out sounds absolutely dreadful, but I always remind myself of how good it will feel afterward. Euphoric, almost!"

Practice yoga
"My mom was a yoga instructor so that practice is in my blood. I love an intense vinyasa class - and even better if its blasting hip hop and done in a dark room with candlelight. The best!"

Meditate through exercise
"Running has always been my form of moving meditation, which I relish because it allows me to get out of my head. I also work closely with a personal trainer named Craig McNamee when I am filming Suits in Toronto."

Train with a friend
"I'm eager to come to the UK to do a workout with Russell [Bateman], the founder of SBC. My friend Millie Macintosh raves about his workouts, so I’ll call her up to do a class together next time I’m back in London."

Embrace your unique features
"When I look in the mirror I see my freckles. And I love them."

Don't forget to breathe
"Slowly and mindfully."

BEAUTY IS A SAGE MOMENT

Miss Intense

"Stillness speaks to the moment. Truth is comes to us comes from us. What is within us is recognized in the whole of Creation as valid points of light or darkness. Every asana I've ever done has spoken of this from a point of light or darkness to my bodies with awareness to the environments within me. At the end of every pose is breath where the beginning began with breath, too..." ~ Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories 5.6.13

AMONGST THE GREATS

Awesome Man Stuff
Asana in the Mountains
September 10, 2013

"There is an incredible beauty at play here, and simply because one has not attempted to ascend into the higher realms of being does not mean others have not. Everything that is not believable cannot be explained away with simplicity. Nor with simplicity can the mysterious be conveyed to the dull or the crude, the timid and the fearful.

I know a small handful of yogis in the Washington DC metropolitan area who do things like this in the mountains we have around here. It isn't for sport. It is much deeper." - Gregory E. Woods 9.13.13

"I'd love to drink a beer with these four men, or smoke cigars if they smoke, but individually one-on-one what could an average man contribute to a conversation with men who've accomplished so much and spent the bulk of their years in pursuit of excellence as a daily routine?" - Gregory

ORGASMS

Black woman yogi

"Yoga can improve orgasms. When a person has an orgasm, the pelvic floor muscles that run between the legs rapidly contract. In yoga, the pelvic floor muscles are known as moola bandha. Yoga strengthens them, providing benefits similar to Kegel exercises."

Spiritual Practice

asana I can't see myself doing !!!!

"Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000 years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans are enjoying its health benefits. Yoga can hardly be called a trend. Most Westernized yoga classes focus on learning physical poses, which are called asanas. They also usually include some form of breathing technique and possibly a meditation technique as well. Some yoga classes are designed purely for relaxation. But there are styles of yoga that teach you how to move your body in new ways. Choosing one of these styles offers the greatest health benefits by enabling you to develop your flexibility, strength, and balance." –  Zenity Fitness

A growing body of research shows that yoga can improve sex and may even prevent and treat sex problems by increasing the overall health of the cardiovascular system."

DARK SKIN 10

DARK SKINNED WOMEN

The people from the Land of the Blacks brought the spiritual sciences to the Earth Walkers. Bestowing gift after gift to the People in the spirit of a Giver it should not be a surprise why the Land of the Blacks is bereaved of its former glory. Today, Black People are a tribal people by blood and heritage, and the Chief has been replaced by the Messiah. We have absorbed all the contradictory energies of White people to the degree it is difficult to tell the difference between us, and our ancestors can barely tell us a part from our conquerors.

My father was right when he said, "Black People own their tragedies!" But I've learned to follow the lead of my upbringing and spend a lot of time in the wider world. I can't carry that burden of today's dark angst. I've learned over the years to cheer myself with all of the light and brilliance of Black America and the rest of our Diaspora. There is an inexhaustible supply of it, and it will keep me going at the oddest times into the magical spheres of creation and creativity we were originally known and respected for.. The attendant fears of the Black people in the Americas, and elsewhere are too unpredictable an animal so healers have to work in shifts shifting energies among the lame and broken of heart and spirit. It is difficult work but it is work necessary. Peoples from the different races now have Medicines Black people desperately need, but false pride and a possessive spirit keep many from sitting in sacred spaces outside of the Church, and so they die, and their last breath is inhaled by their children's children and passed to the next and the next.  - Gregory E. THE MAGIC WITHIN YOU

“... there is a deep story within a Mother's song and the promise of Life she holds, and the experience of Life within the Beauty structured around and within the clarity occurring within your spirit of purpose.” - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories (jan.22, 2012)

TREE MEDICINE

Tree woman photo by Marsha Carmichael

"The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that its center is really everywhere, it is within each of us." — Black Elk

YOGAVILLE

The Place

Two days of prayer, release and immersion into spirit with a people on a path different than mine. Back from a dream into another I am a different man for the experience. There were no planes flying overhead breaking wind and rhythms or altering currents. The people were Yogi’s, students, teachers, masters, and spiritual people from around the globe, largely white; all seeking to balance and understand their place in the world.

The people, including the staff, were kind, considerate of each other and focused on their path and purpose. The draw for the weekend was a musician, Jai Uttal with Daniel Paul. These two men were “Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing.” Jai Uttal introduced me to “the ancient practice of “kirtan” (or chanting), the heart of devotional Yoga.”

Jai Uttal wrote, “These ancient chants contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers and expressing a full range of emotions through our voices we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries.” This is the best way to describe the worshiping. I could not find the words.

The retreat center has some extraordinary temples on the land for silent meditations built upon an energy line in the forest beginning atop a small mountain and ending in the lowlands. There is a Lotus temple on the low land with two levels. The levels mirror each other and speak for each other in their honoring and understanding of the spiritual paths of mankind. There is sacred power here. It, itself, asks to be experienced. I could not make you see what my spirit, body, senses and emotions felt or perceived.

The puzzling and curious thing about Yogaville and the practice of yogis is their relationship with earth. Intellectually and in prayer earth is grasped, understood and acknowledged but it is a distance relative. The prayers and meditation on 800 acres of woodland is dense, powerful, and is a large circular presence that extends beyond their borders. That itself needs to be experienced.

The woods are a buffer against the world and its distractions and illusions. But it was inconceivable to those I asked that it could be anything more. There was no relationship with the Earth outside of the abstract of intellect, concept and prayer.
