HAUSA Tale of FRIENDSHIP

DARK Beauty. Ethereal. Veronika Castrillo by Eva Corbella Photography

Compelling. Kate Barry, the red list!

Story of a great friendship and how it was put to the test

This story is about some young men who were friends.

Some boys made a covenant of friendship; they lived together, (and) were inseparable. They had their maidens in an outlying village. Always they used to go together (and) bring them. On one occasion, one of his friends did not go, so only one went to bring the maidens. When he went, he brought back the maids.

(As) they were going along, they met a lion; and it knocked down and lay on one of the girls, but he, he drew his sword and cut at the lion's head. The lion died, and he found the maiden was not dead. And he told her to lie down beneath the lion along with him, and one of them was to go and tell his friend.

So she consented, (and) ran off (and) found he has begun to sleep. She roused him, (and) he said, 'Where are So-and-so and So-and-so?' And she said, 'They are out there, a lion has killed them.' And he rose up, he did not take anything with him, he went along and came and reached (where) the lion was; it was above them.

He did not hesitate, but sprang and climbed on the lion. He thought it was alive. Truly it was dead. Then his friend rose up and said, 'Rise, So-and-so, you have proved yourself (a free-born) man.' So they lifted up the maiden (and) went home.
Now among them who was better than another?
If you do not know, there it is.

Off with the rat's head.

NOT PLAYING, LEARNING

Friendship between women is liken unto ...
Women, even as girls, innocently; no, playfully tease the lines of sensuality, intimacy, and friendship. Their ways of crossing over those lines make judgment seem an affront to the freedom of their will. How it seems is not as simple as touching each other's bottoms. It is as complex as feeling defiance and free expression hush the raw nerves of men who want them. It is like scraping their nails across the hostility of men's historical relationship with law and judgment over them in modern societies.

One cannot call their intimacies shared as girlfriends political statements, and slaps against patrilarchal authority without understand how freeing it is to have close friends. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 6/20/16

Older wives have demands upon their men younger women have to discern & later study to become older wives. This isn't a catch-22. It is a riddle, a door to maturing into a woman. It takes a good marriage to grasp this.

Humility

Gianni Crow, (c.) a Native man walking in New York city
(Sept. 29, 2015) has something to say ...

"Don't give me your labels or those causes you travel under. I respond to you, not what you call yourself. If you insist that I must accept your labels and all the wrappings that go with them, where is the room and opportunity to know the real person? A rare friendship meets on common ground of hope and need and tender feelings - not on the strength of names and labels and challenges.

We are simply friends. I see your smile."  ~ Bear Warrior (Bear Gonzales) 4.10.16

Tribute to the needs of our Times.

You could ask for the truth to be told, Herb and the truth will recognize you. Our young are a different sort by the way they have been bred, and wed to a way of seeing the world around them without the lens of fighters. The fighters amongst our young people struggle with illusions they don't know are working against them. One illusion they resort to is their insistence on seeking their own counsel. How to get them to seek and listen to their elders and ancestors will not only save them time, but will give them real strength and real power!

The song you wrote,
Herb is simple and the hardest truths are told simply. The difficulty our children have is believing it is hard to find the truth because so many have been told the truth is hidden by powerful people...

I heard all that in the song you wrote, and felt it in the needs of the times we are living. Thank you for the simplicity of truth.

Resistance Isn’t Futile

Resistance is futile.

At least that’s what they say.
But we’ve never been the kind to let
An adage get in the way.

We are told that acceptance,
Can be the way to peace.
But some things can’t be accepted.
Let our resistance never cease.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
It’s the only way.
To battle injustice.
When injustice comes our way.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
In spite of what you’ve heard.
Sometimes in the fight for right
No is the only word.

For to love humanity,
Means never saying “Yes”
To things that are inhuman,
Things that make us less.

Let’s gather our collective voice,
And together we’ll resist
Oppression and greed,
Hatred, and selfishness.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
It’s the only way.
To battle injustice.
When injustice comes our way.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
In spite of what you’ve heard.
Sometimes in the fight for right
No is the only word.

Resistance is futile,
So we’ve heard it said.
But those who’ve gone before us
And in whose path we tread.

Have shown us that the way to right
Is refusing to accept
The unacceptable wrong.
And braving the next step.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
It’s the only way.
To battle injustice.
When injustice comes our way.

Oh, resistance isn’t futile.
In spite of what you’ve heard.
Sometimes in the fight for right
No is the only word.

Asian women and Black American women are not common bedfellows. Friendship between the two is unlikely. Those walls set up by Asians have not been torn down by the defenses Blacks erect around their sense of place and purpose. These two women must be working together as models most likely.

How's that for cultural assumptions?

You gotta know your neighbors. - Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories 12/19/16

Courage takes Truth to Self

Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe seated in a club.

During the ‘50s, one of the most popular venues was Mocambo in Hollywood. Frank Sinatra made his Los Angeles debut at Mocambo in 1943, and it was frequented by the likes of Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Lana Turner.

Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to play at Mocambo because of her race. Then, one of her biggest fans made a telephone call that quite possibly changed the path of her career for good.... Here, she tells the story of how Marilyn Monroe changed her life: “I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt … she personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him – and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status – that the press would go wild.

“The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman – a little ahead of her times. And she didn’t know it."

FRIENDS

Friendship of Tortoise and Eagle - African

It was not often that the tortoise and the eagle met, for the one spent his days in the clouds and the other in the under-a-bush. However, when the eagle heard what a warm-hearted little fellow the tortoise was, he went to pay a call on him.

The tortoise family showed such pleasure in his company and fed him so lavishly that the eagle returned again and again, while every time as he flew away he laughed, "Ha, ha! I can enjoy the hospitality of the tortoise on the ground but he can never reach my eyrie in the tree-top!"

The eagle's frequent visits, his selfishness and ingratitude became the talk of the forest animals. The eagle and the frog were never on speaking terms; for the eagle was accustomed to swooping down to carry a frog home for supper.

So the frog called from the stream bank, "Friend tortoise, give me beans and I will give you wisdom."

After enjoying the bowl of beans the frog said, "Friend tortoise, the eagle is abusing your kindness, for after every visit he flies away laughing, 'Ha ha! I can enjoy the hospitality of the tortoise on the ground but he can never enjoy mine, for my eyrie is in the tree-tops.' Next time the eagle visits you, say, 'Give me a gourd, and I will send food to your wife and children too'."

The eagle brought a gourd, enjoyed a feast, and as he left he called back, "I will call later for the present for my wife."

The eagle flew away laughing to himself as usual, "Ha ha! I have enjoyed the tortoise's food, but he can never come to my eyrie to taste of mine."

The frog arrived and said, "Now, tortoise, get into the gourd. Your wife will cover you over with fresh food and the eagle will carry you to his home in the treetops."

Presently the eagle returned. The tortoise's wife told him, "My husband is away but he left this gourd filled with food for your family."

The eagle flew away with the gourd, little suspecting that the tortoise was inside. The tortoise could hear every word as he laughed, "Ha! ha! I share the tortoise's food but he can never visit my eyrie to share mine."

As the gourd was emptied out onto the eagle's eyrie the tortoise crawled from it and said, "Friend eagle, you have so often visited my home that I thought it would be nice to enjoy the hospitality of yours."

The eagle was furious. "I will peck the flesh from your bones," he said. But he only hurt his beak against the tortoise's hard back. ~ from a Central African tribe

Thanksgiving Day to me...

Gregory E. Woods, Creek & Crow Indian African man

I am an African-American man. I am an Absaroka Muskogee Indian. I am a Keeper of Stories, and a Keeper of the Drum. The two responsibilities are related to each other, and have power in the telling today the day before Thanksgiving Day! Nothing offensive in here, but the Native story about Thanksgiving has to be told. The story is one of betrayals, and the murder celebration the immigrants held! But that story will not be told here. This story will be told:

I know a little about Turkey medicine. My friend Pam is an Eastern Band Cherokee. She taught Turkey medicine to me one day in the mountains of Virginia. I knew medicine was coming my way on the trip to the mountains. I was looking for it the whole ride up to the mountains. Just as we got to her property a large turkey walked out of the woods and collapsed dead. We stopped the car, and walked to his body, and left tobacco offerings with our prayers.

"What do we do with him?" Pam asked. "Take him to the house and listen." I said.

During the following ceremony Turkey’s spirit, in return, allowed us to take the wings, tail feathers, and the necklace the Turkey wore. We buried the Turkey in the northern part of the Medicine Wheel we had earlier built on the land. The necklace Turkey wore was given to me. Pam explained that hunters have another name for it, but she learned from watching their ceremonies the necklace under their beaks is a Medicine necklace with its own powers. Turkey’s are Keepers of Ceremony!

Pam would travel alone into the mountains and sit. She can become a ghost in the forest. Turkeys would land unaware of her and perform ceremonial dances as the sun set. She said one had to be completely still. Turkey People are very sensitive to movements subtle or not. Turkeys have a deep sense of ceremony. Deep in their dances they are balanced and attuned to the subtle elements at work around them. It is a natural teaching for the People, and by People, since we are talking about the colonial times; I am talking about Turtle Island’s indigenous people's relationship with living things, and our Grandmother Earth.

The immigrants remain, to this day, outside of these things for the most part and continually legislate and make laws from a framework that is disconnected from the subtle elements that move, engage, and try, in this day and age, to balance everything. Their paradigms have taught billions of people for the last few centuries their ways, and we all participate in the process of disrespecting our Earth, shortening our time on Earth, and neglecting our spiritual responsibilities to each other. These are my words.

Blood of our Brothers

Israel woman soldier in combat (2013)

murder
Jesus said these words, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." not exclusively to soldiers, but to men born of a woman. In that moment amongst the Hebrews the disciples culturally understood Jesus as man, an initiated man talking to them because men's relationship with blood is profoundly and basically different from women's relationship with blood. He was addressing primal truths centered around life-death-resurrection as if love is stronger than death!

The covenant relationships between men Jesus spoke of to his disciples are about love between men beyond normal relationships between men with or without substance to their friendships. I say 'his disciples' because Jesus, as a Rabbi, had to speak the way one speaks to initiates when addressing his men, and to regular people another way he spoke so ears may hear with clarity in the context of what they know and who they are. . .

There is a lot more to share, but in the context of this medium one can only plunge so deep into the wells of knowledge and the warrior teachings soldiers don't get until they have died, faced their shadows, or lost parts of their spirit killing people in the killing theaters. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories (Creek, African) Nov. 3, 2015

"Taking a stance for a cause has ripple effects moving vertically and horizontally and in a circular fashion through the consciousness of others. Relationships move in those directions between one person and another, and the Creator, however seen, and the soul. It takes courage to speak the truth into a popular lie held high by people's fear to speak it into non-existence." ~ Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 5.18.13

BETWEEN RACE & FRIENDSHIP

"Black consciousness therefore takes cognizance of the deliberateness of God's plan in creating black people black." ~ Steve Biko

Many things are evident in a smile, a moment between friends, and lovers. Many things are between friendships that mean something, or could mean something if it were not for the racial and societal barriers set up by history between people, groups and governments.

Today, there is a startling difference in the friendships between American Blacks and Whites compared to the end of the Civil Rights movement. The tension and fear are absent as they were then in part because it eventually became evident Black Power was harnessed by a greater need to assimilate. Largely white administrators in charge of educating American children decided to stifle children's growth collectively through cruel measures of manipulation and take away policies that took the creative aspect of learning from the children. Black children creatively reacted by creating from the morass Go Go music in Washington DC, and in New York came Hip Hop. Go Go returned the soul of 'Chocolate City' to its African roots and explored family and community and unity and solidarity with the rudiments of African rhythms,  and chants. In New York city expression through Hip Hop grew into an international voice of a generation and the divides between people fell in unforeseen ways.

COUNSEL

Forgiveness

"How much effort would you put forward to help a so called friend if in times of power grabbing he is found working with the enemy and trying to destroy you?" ~ anon

During the hurt I would hurt. But, as it subsides I would speak my thoughts, and react according to my personality. My decision to distance myself is contingent upon the words of his heart. Two Friends Together!

A pregnant actress, Jennifer Love Hewitt out with a friend grabbed lunch at La Scala after doing some shopping in Beverly Hills, California last year (Jul 17, 2013). She was pregnant expecting her first child with "The Client List' co-star Brian Hallisay wearing a pastel purple and white shirt dress that must've flowed or seemed to float around her body creating a breathtaking event!

The picture is engaging and memorable, but being followed and photographed constantly has to harass the senses. It creates a lot of money throughout the entertainment food chain, but what it feels like most of us will never know. What we will be able to tell our grandchildren is how we allowed public spying to become part of our daily life. As if privacy didn't matter, and freedom didn't matter as much as the convenience of the toys we purchased we will have the daunting task of explaining how easy it was to be oblivious to the loss of freedoms and assumptions of freedom to our grandchildren. It won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination. I imagine a lot of denial will occur in many a living room a couple of decades from now, but the contrary proof will be on YouTube, and Facebook.

It is appealing to the eye, intriguing to think about, and interesting looking at a picture of the actress with someone fine enough to steal the attention away from her. Jennifer must must have a lot of self confidence to have such a good looking friend who easily upstages her visually. That is probably not important to either of them, so strong is their friendship. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories

ZINTKALA OYATE

PETER V. CATCHES
Meets Lee Standing Bear MooreBy Takatoka

This is a story about the meeting of two men --- from different places but with one heart.

Peter V. Catches,Jr. (Zintkala Oyate) is Keeper of the Spotted Eagle Way  of Lakota medicine, its oral history, sacred rites, and experiential teachings. Peter has conducted the Spotted Eagle Sun Dance at his home on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for 28 consecutive years. He is the descendant of 37 generations of medicine men.  His family name, Catches-the-Enemy, was shortened a few generations ago.

Lee Standing Bear began his acquaintance with Peter during a ride from the Houston Airport to the Rothko Chapel.  Their hostess and mutual friend, Ingeborg Hayes, also known by many as  She Who Brings Cultures Together, was driving.  Both Zintkala and Standing Bear know her as "Sunshine." She is International Administrative Coordinator at the University of Houston at Clear Lake.

Peter Catches and Lee Standing Bear were asked to officiate sunrise services the next day during a Peace Vigil at the Rothko Center near downtown Houston.  Event organizers decided the ceremonies should be led by American Indians and this prompted Ingeborg to suggest Peter and Lee for this honor.

The drive to the Center took nearly an hour.  Sunshine and Peter sat in the front seat as Bear sat in the back.  They all chatted about the reservation, Manataka, Houston, the upcoming event and a dozen other topics, but the back of Peter's head caught Bear's eye.  His attention was drawn away from the conversation several times as Bear stared at the beautiful spotted eagle feather hanging from Peter's long black hair.

Bear was mesmerized and could not help but sneak a quick touch.  Then another and another.  Careful not to be seen, Bear stole one more brush along the edge of the magnificent specimen.  Bear was nearly caught when Peter moved his head with a quick jerk.   Somehow the situation struck Bear funny, so he gave the feather a sharp little tug pulling his hair.   Again, Peter moved his head but said nothing.  This was fun for Bear!

Throughout the trip, the beautiful feather mysteriously moved from place to place on Peter's back as he absent-mindedly shook his head or brushed away little spirits.   This is the way the two men began their weekend visit.

The Rothko Chapel is an internationally known, non-denominational peace, worship and meditation center.  Dignitaries such as President Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, His Holiness Dali Lama, and ambassadors of many nations have participated in ceremonies and events at the Rothko.  In 1966, the site was consecrated by the Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox Catholic, and Protestant religions.    According to its brochure, the Rothko is a Tree with many branches with "...mysterious beauty…" and "...hospitable shade to everyone".

Sunshine escorted Bear inside the large chapel while Peter rested in the shade to get off a bad foot.  He was wise to check things out before going inside. The building is an octagonal cement edifice with large all-black paintings covering most of the gray cement walls inside - "better to meditate by" they said.  The subdued lighting and air conditioned coolness made the walls sweat slightly.  Rows of small unadorned concrete benches stretch across the bare floor.

Bear's throat was full of ooohs, mmms, and ugghs throughout the tour.  He could not wait to get outside to the yellow sunshine, blue skies, green trees and brown earth.  Once outside Bear said to himself, "That place gives me the willies.  Gray cement and black to meditate?  White would have been better."  Deeepressssing.

In a few minutes, volunteers began to gather to discuss plans for the event set to take place at 6:00 a.m., Saturday.  Peter and Bear sat around a make-believe Fire Circle to relax.   Between swatting mosquitoes and shaking hands with visitors, Pete whispered to Bear,  "You know that place gives me the willies."  "Me too!", Bear growled softly.   Then both men had fun as they proceeded to mentally and sometimes verbally to take the building apart to allow Mother Earth to see what is inside.
Their first meal was a light lunch at a fancy deli near downtown.  It was made more enjoyable with good conversation.  Sunshine pointed out the namesake of the Center was a wealthy artist, Rothko, who committed suicide before the building was completed.  Peter and Bear retired to the sidewalk patio to smoke and talk while the others discussed the upcoming event.   The two men talked about working with people in South Dakota, Lakota and Kituwah ceremonies, the birds, Manataka, water, and Pete's book.

"Sacred Fireplace" (Oceti Wakan) was written by Peter and his late father, Pete Catches Sr. (Petaga Yuha Mani - He Who Walks with Hot Coals) who is credited with reviving the traditional Sundance ceremony among the Lakota.  In 1964 Pete Catches Sr. was named Sundance chief by the Oglala Sioux tribal council, the only such distinction in tribal history.

Following the first meal, Sunshine became a magician and made  bountiful amounts of food appear of out thin air that kept Peter and Bear full and sleepy throughout the weekend.   Both men look like they enjoy eating.  In the evening a group gathered at the Olive Garden Restaurant.  It was during these pleasant interludes that the two Indians really began to know each other.   After meals, they sat around a table and told stories, sang to the drum and allowed little glimpses of their hearts to be revealed.
Ceremonies the next morning went fairly well.   Prayers were given in the Circle by a Buddhist monk, a Muslim teacher, a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, a Baptist minister and a host of others.  Peter performed the sacred Pipe ceremony and Bear told the story of Manataka.  The event was a beautiful affair and the circle of friends joined there brought many blessings and good spirits to the occasion.   The crowd was small and they had to stand or sit on the concrete for nearly three hours.  That's dedication to the idea of peace!

Bear later recalled the beautiful faces of the people gathered there. Wearing many different colors they stood and prayed, holding hands in the sacred Circle. Their countenance was sweet and airy as a field of wildflowers. Their prayers were real, honest and powerful. This was a event to remember. Too bad we do not do this on a daily basis wherever we are.

It was hot by 8:30 and the mosquitoes began to pester Peter again.  Bear knew Pete was wondering why the little buggers did not bite Bear.

They ate, slept, drummed, told stories, ate and lounged around the rest of the afternoon until evening when it was time to go eat again at an exciting seafood place on the bay.   As Sunshine drove into the parking lot, Peter caught site of a brightly lit Ferris wheel and insisted everyone go for a ride.  "I want to say I did something while in Houston…," he said.  Sunshine, Peter and Bear climbed aboard and swung at the top under bright stars while looking out over the black ocean water.   "That was fun," Bear said.

That night, the two men sat alone outside under the stars in Sunshine's backyard and spoke of creation and the blessings they had received.  Peter did not really sit still though.  Slapping mosquitoes and itching broke the silence between words.  Finally, in the darkness Bear said, "Ya know, I brought them…"   Peter's head quickly jerked in Bear's direction and a glint came to his eye.    He smiled... and swatted another one.

"When you journey to Manataka honored brother, well will show you mosquitoes ten times bigger than these little squirts," Bear said.   "Uggggh," Peter grumbled.    Their talk wandered over a dozen subjects in search of the unknown.  Indians are curious folks you know.
The next morning Peter and Bear enjoyed a large breakfast and guests.  Afterwards, they sat speaking quietly.  Peter shared more about his path and Bear spoke of the deep mysteries and read a poem and prophecy about Manataka.

When it came time to depart at the airport, Peter looked at Bear's big black hat with seven feathers and said,  "That one sure is nice, what is it?"

"Aha, it comes from the wilds of Central America," Bear said plucking the blue, orange, yellow and green feather from the hat and holding it in his hand. "It came to me by way of a Mayan priestess and wonderful lady who knows some secrets of the Manataka Stone," explained Bear.

The Guacamaya feather is given to a person who speaks with spirit in their heart. It is the most sacred feather of the Aztec and Maya and the bird is nearly extinct. The Guacamaya bird is huge and aggressive when approached, but if the bird is respectfully asked for a feather, she will remove a feather and fly away leaving her present.

"The Guacamaya has rainbow colors to remind you of Manataka. When it speaks, it repeats what the spirit is saying. This feather is now yours in remembrance of our meeting, the honor and respect I felt in your presence and the blessings you will bring to Manataka in years to come," Bear said tearfully.

A week later Bear mailed Peter a quick thank you note with two very large mosquitoes hawks taped to a note saying, "Baby Arkansas Mosquitoes"  Two weeks later a package arrived from Peter.  Inside was a beautiful, perfectly formed Spotted Eagle Feather used in the Oglala Lakota Sundance for 7 years.  Bear proudly slid the new feather into the brim of his big black hat - a new friend had been won.  Today, that eagle feather rests enclosed in red cloth in a honored position on Bear's gifting table.  Mitakuye Oyasin!

Some might say the Bear disrespected Peter as he pulled on his hair and joked with him about mosquitoes.  Bear recognizes the awesome privilege of meeting Catches-the-Enemy and will forever remember the quite words they spoke.  Besides, Zintkala Oyate knows a few jokes too.

Peter shares the wisdom of generations and his open heart to anyone who can read.  If you are interested in learning about the special ceremonies and paths of the Spotted Eagle way, click below to order this inexpensive book, "Sacred Fireplace".  Every morning I read a passage or two to start the day.  -- Bear    SACRED FIREPLACE
