I never heard a man complain about Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, but I know there were men upset their children saw Janet Jackson's nipple and her breast. Underneath it all there is a general and shared disgust of women's nipples. It is a cultural thing not shared by every culture upon the globe. In American culture a woman's nipple and her breasts are alternately deplored, praised, or the object of envy, lust, and subject to gross alterations. There is shame embedded in statements made by famous women denouncing, or down playing the significance, and the power of their breasts making declarations that they are not defined by their breasts, or their capacity to birth, and nurture. Is that the attitude of an elitist? Yes? No? Maybe.What is that?

There is an enormous amount of money making pornographic movies for sale, and the film makers, actors, and crew in the porn business are making good incomes. The internet has shot the profitability of porn beyond anything imagined 20 years ago, and a lot of ill-equipped, and technically unsophisticated men, and women are sitting in their houses making money selling sex. A lot of women are more than willing to make a few bucks posing nude or performing some sexual act for the camera to make cash, and a name for themselves. The selling of sex extends into the crime of sex trafficking  and the number of boys, and girls and women stolen to service men in the United States, and other countries is staggering. Pimps are appealing to young men and women in every economic class, and the pimp mentality has cheapened the value of women and subjugated the importance, and sacredness of punany to crude measures, and in some cases, unspeakable degradation. In the midst of all of this whoredom runs its trails through many a church. One of the best places for a whore to pick up a whore is in the church. Alongside all of this is the current generation's women seeking fame as an end unto itself and willing to do anything to be famous, seen, and remembered. Somehow, a number of famous actresses subscribe to leaking video of themselves having sex with someone to enhance their notoriety, and further their careers.

When Dr. John Henrik Clarke said, "The African Man is the greatest fighting machine God ever created!" he was speaking into the past about our past. His words are now a memorial to a glory and a fact now in the bygone, in our collective pasts. The African today is not the same. Africa isn't the the same Africa I traveled and lived in a few decades ago. Today African's fighting spirit has created a culture where Africans fight each other in business, politics, and regard the white man as a God. Africans on the continent are increasingly bleaching their skins, and many African women are looking as much like a white woman as chemically possible. Too many Africans living in the United States harbor lofty views about Black Americans whites taught them, and the two communities (Africans and Black Americans) are not bed partners in terms of business. One cannot trust the other for the contempt the other feels for the host brethren.

In daily life the tone of late great African thinkers and historians are not capturing the life struggles and changes amongst descendants of the great African fighters. This a dangerously broad subject predictably seldom discussed between Africans from the continent and Black Americans from the US. Not intelligently dealt with the Africans who come to the United States to live or become citizens will find their lives and destinies intertwined with the historic realities and struggles Black Americans face daily, and struggle to overcome to become whole. Here, in the good ol' US of A by the second generation African children will have to make choices of identity their ancestors will not necessarily agree with, or to just to survive as African Americans!

To all my Washington Football fans, according to history, here is a description of the term 'Redskin' 

"Many claim the term is a particularly egregious racial epithet that represents a bloody era in American history in which Indigenous Americans were hunted, killed, and forcibly removed from their lands by European settlers. The claim often centers around a proclamation against Penobscot Indians in 1755 issued by King George II of Great Britain, known commonly as the Phips Proclamation. 

The proclamation orders, “His Majesty’s subjects to Embrace all opportunities of pursuing, captivating, killing and Destroying all and every of the aforesaid Indians.” The colonial government paid 50 pounds for scalps of males over 12 years, 25 pounds for scalps of women over 12, and 20 pounds for scalps of boys and girls under 12. Twenty-five British pounds sterling in 1755, worth around $9,000 today —a small fortune in those days when an English teacher earned 60 pounds a year. 

However, since the proclamation itself does not use the word redskin, citing it as the origin of "redskin = scalp" has also been called "revisionist history". Explain to me why do you cheer for a team that uses a derogatory term. (Please don't use the answer because I was born in DC). What are you doing to show the Native American people that you care? Are you willing to make a stand or simply go along with the demeaning and degradation of a culture. I've thought a great deal about this subject as an Indian and as an African. Today reading this post I was struck again by language and the tenor of the language. The short answer is cruel. The longer answer requires thought, and a historical perspective.


In the Washington DC area Blacks, for the most part, are submissive to the dictates of Southern White sensibilities, and their devotion to the football team reflects how deeply embedded is the nigger-mentality of slave to master. It is a deep thing, but consistent in the culture of the city. It is easy to point out. I have and I can, but what is the point? Sports fever is devoid of reasonable commitment to high ideals, but filled with facts and statistics and hysteria and fun. Black and White fans have their football team and schools teach that we Indians are extinct. So, why should people rally around changing the name of football teams and mascots around the country? The good news is that young Indians have organized around the country and successfully convinced whole towns to change the names and mascots of their teams. Indians, like other people, do not like being insulted.

The Washington DC football team and the city are Southern-bred. It wasn't until the very early 1990's that Black Americans riding public transportation stopped instinctively sitting in the back of the train or the bus. Blacks will fight you to the death for the right to call themselves niggers, and go ballistic if anyone white, brown, yellow, or red would dare call them a nigger! Sinclair, you and I and others are asking a populace tied to a tradition of bondage to stop calling their football team a name with a horrible stench and stigma to it. It is a noble idea, but fruitless. As long as whites own the images Black folks think are their own images the important shifts of consciousness will not occur, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream will remain just that: a dream!

These are my words. In part this my tribute to the 9/11 tributes because a similar mindset is embedded in the American mindset. Not even the bombings of three cities in 2001 could shake the country from its attachment to oppression, slavery and the marketing of lives. This is the American way. - Gregory E. Woods 9.11.13
