EYE CANDY

There obviously is truth in the trend I was sensing about the news: women are wearing shorter and better form fitting dresses. The morning shows are the most visual displays of flesh. Each of the major and the minor stations employ sex appeal. How else can women watch television and comment on other women while listening to news reports? Or men. How can any program director hope to gain a male viewing audience without good looking women telling stories while we struggle to focus on what they are seeing, I'm sorry; saying?

In some public circles, or intimate home visits it isn't safe, or wise to mention the fashion trend of news anchors. In a town like Washington DC with all its pretense and substance one cannot afford to appear, or actually be shallow politically. You'd get eaten alive in many circles. Even the lest educated have solid input on political issues affecting the city. But, one thing we agree on is our news anchors and reporters are damn good looking and charming! Even the men, but we're not here to talk about them.

Today's news is in vivid bold colors as the reporting is told in poorer styles with as much happy sounds as possible without appearing silly. A serious person cannot take network news as their only news source. It'll mark you unfavorably in circles that count in towns like D.C. where I live and make my contributions to society. To be clear television first and foremost is about the advertisement. It has to be a money making enterprise. Each program has to be profitable. Prior to the fashion shows of network news news was not profitable. I've witnessed the whole gamut of changes throughout the decades, and it is entertaining and enlightening an insight into business, and the American culture.

Network news is entertainment interrupted by serious pieces here and there. It is a business. It is run as a business and it is measured and judged as a business. Millions of dollars go into this industry. It is fascinating the complexity of it all! Most may not know this, but our channel 7 news and channel 8 are under the same umbrella, and rank 8th in the country! That means millions of dollars are running in and out of those offices and studio in Virginia.

It is all interesting. It is all business so why are we complaining if we as citizens don't support the media outlets financially that are informative, deeper in substance, and outside of the mainstream? Is entertainment more important to us, do we enjoy complaining about the way things are, or like the ancient Romans have we descended into gluttony and really don't give a damn as long as we can just get along to get along?
