Seven Principles of Bushido 

Bushidō (武士道) or the “Way of the Warrior” describes a uniquely Japanese code of ethical conduct adhered to by the samurai. It is loosely analogous to Western concepts of chivalry (think Knights of the Round Table) and yet it is more. Bushido encompasses a system of moral principles. It embodies a code of daily living for the samurai. Those instructed in the code are expected to discipline themselves according to it. There are seven principles of Bushido: 

1.  Rectitude.  Correct judgment or procedure for the resolution of righteousness. “To die when it is right to die, to strike when it is right to strike.”

2.  Courage.  A virtue only in the cause of righteousness. Death for an unworthy cause was termed a dog”s death. “It is true courage to live when it is right to live, and to die only when it is right to die.”

3.  Benevolence. Love, affection for others, sympathy and nobility of feeling are regarded as the highest attributes of the soul. “Benevolence brings under its sway whatever hinder its power just as water subdues fire.”

4.  Politeness.  A poor virtue if it is actuated only by a fear of offending good taste. Rather it should stem from a sympathetic regard for the feeling of others. “In its highest form politeness approaches love.”

5.  Veracity.  “Truthfulness.” Lying was deemed cowardly, and it was regarded as dishonorable. Indeed the word of a samurai guaranteed the truthfulness of an assertion. No oath is necessary. “Propriety carried beyond bounds becomes a lie.”

6.  Honor.  A vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth is implicit in the word honor. “Dishonor is like a scar on a tree which time, instead of effacing only helps to enlarge.”

7.  Loyalty.  Only in the code of chivalrous honor does loyalty assume importance. In the conflict between loyalty and affection the code never wavers from the choice of loyalty. “A samurai was obliged to appeal to the intelligence and conscience of his sovereign by demonstrating the sincerity of his words with the shedding of his own blood.”

Learn to watch the teachers of the field, the lords that go unnoticed cause they are all humbled; they show their power in their humility, and they would never brag, or boast of their feats to none cause their venture shows in the strides of their good ethics on how to respect what is truly not theirs alone.

Show yourself that you too must learn and to be in this class of learning there will always be a block for you to stumble on for you to look down to show your pride and ego that they must sit down and watch how the humble cross the bridge where the rapids of water are in rage and want to devour the soul of those two to hold on; is to remember what was given to you with love and earnest; to put the prayer on smoke means you have learned your place and you know that reality is a place much more real than this. And to hold what is dear too you close cause that is the reason why we touch our hearts when we touch our MOTHER EARTH.

So to all who walk this road, my heart is out for you. May my prayers on smoke cover you and give you the wise breath of the founder of Life....cause

This young man, Colin Kaepernick, in the beginning and after much thought said, "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color!" 

I know that strong men take strong stances... He unleashed the suppressed urges of rage and disbelief in a system governed against the greater good of Black Americans!! I also know that protest amongst Black Americans does not lead us toward deep inner change. As a collective we rise only above the limit of expectation of acceptance of white people. It is a strange dance, but done so often it is called something else by its practitioners.  How will this protest change us?

Masks are so fashionable more often than not people await the nearness of their deaths to unmask themselves. Is that too late?

Asked that question millions of Christians believe it is not, as well as believe a sinner can sin his/her entire life and give their life to Jesus at the end, or near their death and obtain eternal life! Is that fair, true, or an irreconcilable difference between being authentic or disingenuous getting by without discipline of soul, of mind and spirit? 

One of the wisest insights into human development came from the mother of King Solomon. She advised her son in many ways that influence the warrior, and chisel impeccability.

She said, "A man that cannot control his spirit is like a city without walls!" 

If those words are guardians of higher truths why delve into truths if lies can sustain us?

Soldiers Prayer?

There is a question simmering beneath the appearance of patriotic America: should troops be free to worship anywhere?

I agree. People in objection don't understand combat or living in the constant threat of being killed with a sense of duty to something larger than them. All the emotions around outrage over church over state, and anger over religious experiences that didn't make life easy for many, or fury over the system of religion influencing thought and action, melt away in war. What is left is the raw, bare bones of awareness of the fragility of life, and you start to pray sensing the beyond, like never before!

Weapons of the People.

Bows and Arrows

When the Bow and arrow first appeared, it was made as a weapon consisting of a stave made of wood or other elastic material, bent, and held in place by tension of the string. The arrows are thin wooden shafts with feathered tails that is fit into the string by a notch in the end of the shaft. When the arrow is drawn back, the bow is released and the arrow is propelled forward from the release of tension. Arrowheads have been made from a number of materials including stone, flint, metal, and other hard materials.

The Navajo Indians used a short double curve bow similar to the plains style bows. The arrows they made had three feather fletching and lightning groves on the shafts. The Navajo quiver was made of different types of leather including deer hide, cow hide, buffalo hide, fox hide, wolf hide, mountain lion hide, and various others. The quiver may be decorated with fringes, fur, horse mane or beads. The bows were usually made from Mesquite wood and were round on the back and flat on the belly. The back was sometimes lined with sinew and the handle was often wrapped in buckskin. The string was primarily made of sinew.

Some bows were made from Mulberry, Locust, Mesquite, Oak or Maple; however, Mulberry was said to be the Navajo peoples favorite. Sinew strings were fashioned from leg sinew from deer, and arrow shafts were made form mountain mahogany, Apache plume, and mulberry and were fletch with three feathers. There is no record of flint to stone points for hunting; however, a record of sharpened and fire hardened wood tips is available.

The best Apache Indian bows were considered to have been made from mulberry, although locust, oak and maple were sometimes used. The Apache craftsman knew of double curved bows and made some; however, these bows were thought to be inefficient to the single curve self bows that they preferred. The length was usually three to four feet. Bows were made from branches which were stripped of their bark, shaped to size, and dried for a week. After one week, it was greased, bound to shape, placed in hot ashes to keep its shape, and cured for 10 more days. Bows were not immediately fully drawn, but rather gradually broken in. The preferred bow string was made of sinew string, but mescal fibers could be substituted. The Apache made two types of arrows. The first type of arrow was approximately two feet in length and made of hardwood such as mountain mahogany, Apache plum, Mulberry, and Desert Broom. The second type was made from cane and had wooden fore shafts. Hardwood arrows were fashioned from bark peeled branches that had been dried for several days. Once the branches had dried, they were straightened against heated rocs. An arrowhead was bound to the shaft with sinew and hide glue and the fletching of three buzzard, eagle or hawk wing or tail feathers was added.

The Sioux Indians made a double curved bow that was customized in length for each archer. The bow measurement was taken by measuring from the archers outstretched left arm that is parallel with the ground. The bow length is from the left middle finger to the right outside hip at the joint. Although some historians have said the Sioux liked their bows sinew backed, but this is not true. Green Ash was also used to make their bows. This wood was cut when it was green at the approximate size needed, greased, and hung in the lodge to season before finishing. The arrows were made of wood with three feather fletching running even with the nocks and lightning groves. The arrows were measured from the tip of the middle finger to elbow of the right arm and from the wrist to where the hand joins the middle finger. The combined measurements gave the over all arrow length. The Sioux Indians used stone, bone, and sinew arrowheads, but used steel arrowheads as soon as they could trade for them. - anon

The ability not to use one's beauty or be indifferent to it as a chameleon in a role as an actress, to me, has long been impressive. It is a strength translatable in life situations to be indifferent to features that can and do endear one to other people's admiration to focus on a task at hand important enough to benefit others.

How many times have we seen ball players inwardly, and obviously focused on how 'pretty' they are, how good they look at the expense of the game 'profiling' for attention to be drawn on their good looks losing games, making mistakes, or worse get injured injuring another in their vanity?

That's all I ever wanted. Why deny Me that? I wanted to love as a woman, and be loved as a woman. I wanted Eve to be there for Me, and I wanted to be there for her. I wanted to walk in her shoes, but not with that dickhead belonging to Lucifer. The response of men and the angels, it was unconscionable." and signed it with Mother God.

First respondent, said, Kijana WaMzee Chege "What am I reading here?"

"God is both Father and Mother of Creation, Adruma replied. "You are hearing from Mother God, she has a lot to say. This is just the beginning." I sat upright. "Whoa. Whoa. Whoa, Kijana! Go deep into your religion. Adruma is plunging you with his words, and men into the perspective of God, not as man, but the female side of Creation. Christianity has roots in the mysticism of Jewish mystery teachings and even those teachings before the written word that is fundamental to the three blood religions. If it wasn't written on parchment it was in the heavens, and upon the ground. You see, we are taught to understand God through the volumes of sacred text that is masculine. When the cultures and civilizations ascribed to the Goddess, or both God and the Goddess history recorded less wars.

Let us look honestly and deep into the progenitor texts. How we receive the feminine tells the true story of our manhood!"

The Warrior Lifestyle

What is the warrior lifestyle? The true warrior is a rare person in today’s world. He lives life with a different set of values compared with the rest of society. Even those who do share the same values, rarely live a lifestyle which adheres to those values to the extent that the warrior does. To most people, ethics are situational. They make decisions according to what is best for them, instead of what is right. This is not the case with the warrior. The warrior values honor, integrity, justice, and his sense of what is right, above all else. His ethics are not situational; they are his way of life.


The warrior lifestyle revolves around a code of ethics which is non-negotiable. The warrior’s code of ethics, or code of honor, is taken very seriously. To the warrior, distinguishing between right and wrong is of the utmost importance. He sees right and wrong in terms of black and white. He knows that an action is either honorable or dishonorable. This is not meant to imply that honor is black and white; honor is not that simple.


Those who live the lifestyle of the warrior know that whether or not an action is honorable, is determined by both one’s intentions and the situation at hand. This is not to be confused with situational ethics. The warrior’s ethics do not change according to the situation. His actions will change as needed, but his ethics remain set in stone. There is a big difference between ethics and actions. Ethics determine actions; actions do not determine ethics.


The warrior lifestyle is concerned with what is right and what is honorable. A warrior’s ethics revolve around these two issues. Justice and honor are foremost on his mind. His thoughts are centered on “what is right,” not on other people’s opinions of what is right. He realizes that many people profess a belief in absolutes which they neither live by, nor truly believe in, when push comes to shove.
The only absolute that the warrior lives by is that of what is right and wrong. If it is not right, he doesn’t do it. He determines what is right and wrong by his strict code of ethics, not some arbitrary laws or the politically correct standards of the day. The warrior doesn’t appear to be honorable; he is honorable. Sincerity is ingrained in this lifestyle. This is a lifestyle that is meant to be lived, not fantasized about or merely discussed.


This lifestyle consist of much more than being trained in the art of war or the art of self-defense, although these are an important part of the life of the warrior. It also consists of the challenge to perfect one’s character. This is a process much like the Japanese concept of kaizen. Kaizen can be translated as constant, never-ending improvement. True warriors try to apply this concept to every area of their life. They seek to balance and improve each area – spirit, mind and body, on a daily basis.


Each area of your life is important and should be kept in balance. Training men in the art of war or in the art of martial arts, without regard to character, only produces a dangerous man; it does not produce a warrior. In years past, the martial arts masters would not train someone fully until they felt assured of that person’s character. Today most schools will train anyone who can pay, regardless of their character or lack of character. This is dangerous information to give to just any and everyone who comes along. In my opinion, character should be a prerequisite, not only for martial arts training, but for many of the privileges which we enjoy in this country.


I am asked often whether or not I believe that the term “warrior” should apply only to military men and women who have been in war or to trained and experienced fighters. Although I realize this is the literal definition of a warrior, I do not believe that this is the correct definition, not according to the many accounts from past warriors anyway. This literal definition of a warrior is not the definition that is used for our discussion of the warrior lifestyle in Warrior Wisdom . An ape can be trained to throw punches and kick, a dog can be trained to fight, but that doesn’t make either of them warriors. Being a warrior involves more than being trained to fight or being in the military; it involves character training as well. Character training is the true goal of the way of the warrior.


Please don’t misunderstand me; I have great respect for our military men and women. Shoot I am an Army Veteran. But I believe that anyone who has ever served in the military will agree that not every soldier lives by the character traits which are necessary for the warrior lifestyle, anymore than every martial artist or every person in general lives by these standards. I’m not taking anything away from those who serve our country. Every person who serves our country deserves our respect and gratitude, but service doesn’t necessarily indicate that a person is concerned with perfecting his or her character. It is rare to find people who take their ethics seriously today. It is common to find people who claim to take their ethics seriously, but I am referring to people who walk to the walk, not just “talk the talk.”

Yes, the warrior is concerned with physical training and the martial arts, but he also knows that character training is the cornerstone of the warrior lifestyle. The true warrior should be trained in martial arts. His ethics require that he be ready to defend his family, friends, or himself in certain situations. In today’s world, you never know when you may have to use your martial arts skills. It is essential that you have this training to be as self-reliant and as safe as possible, but without a code of ethics, which is based on a deep understanding of right and wrong, there is no warrior; there is only someone trained to fight. There is a difference. Without the character traits of honor, integrity and justice, there is no warrior lifestyle.


In short, the warrior lifestyle is for anyone who want to live a life of excellence; a life which adheres to a strict code of ethics. You must be willing to live your life based on honor, preparedness and what is right. This lifestyle requires that you put your ethics before your comfort, and that you put what is right before what is profitable. It requires filial duty, dedication to family and friends, and a willingness to help those in need. It requires independence in thought and action. This lifestyle is a decision, not a profession. - Bear Warrior (Joe Gonzalez)

I thought a moment and said, "By your question, which I take seriously, I can easily assume the onus is upon other people to raise better children. I've learned how to raise 'good' children who are above average now adults living with their own integrity because of how I was parented, and I enjoy sharing what I know, but this is not an American preoccupation. It should be but culturally we are not advancing in the art of developing children. We are more into warehousing and categorizing our children. Development is too deep an art in our country, it seems, and to many Americans outside of their priorities and belief systems."

There is a story out about a Black girl who quickly and viciously beat a girl and became an insight celebrity because someone recorded it and posted it online. The police are part of this girl's life because another girl apparently committed suicide as a result of the beating. To date what I've read there are no particulars, but the girl who beat the other girl is letting her 20,000 Twitter followers know about how "... she don't give a fuck!"

No need to comment on this story. It is very much an American pastime and it is deeply embedded in Black culture and applauded.  Only thing that should be done is corrective, but if a people and a person are uninterested in changing or maturing what can you do? If someone wants to die there is little I will do for them. What can you do? To want to die is to want nothing. This girl and millions like her seek nothing, and to seek nothing is to seek death which, is the one thing people like her are typically afraid of, and don't understand in terms, and agreements of relationship.

This is a warrior's stance I am speaking from and the crudeness that celebrates this behavior calls itself a nigger and defends that assertion wholeheartedly  A healer of any race, or tribe and discipline is and will always be baffled by the nigger mentality because it devours itself. There are so many healing tools and healing modalities available to this girl, her family and community and to her people, and niggers, but if not so inclined a healer worthy of his/her craft has no choice but to leave her and them to die unto and within themselves. ~ Gregory E. Tactically, the white guy had the technical advantage. If he'd paid attention to details and managed his fears, which are understandable, he could have taken advantage of the Black man's lack of strengthens in the area of strategies. His pants hang. He would be an easy kill in any confrontation with just a little thought given to the art of war.

This Black man gives rise to assumptions many Black man think they have by mere outbursts alone. The thinking of the warrior is far beyond posturing. The same holds true for the white man. Both of them made assumptions as am I thinking I know the story of this scene. But, the emblems of the Klan are there. What we enjoy about this moment is the inner power of the Black man. When Black men face their inner man's demons in like fashion better men will come out of the introspection manhood requires.

Always encourage yourself. No matter how the situation appears or what you feel like, never allow discouragement to have the final word. You're too blessed to not walk in your victory. You'll face trials and obstacles, but you have the power to overcome. Remember, you're a child of God. 
The apostle Paul declared, "I can endure all these things through the power of the one who gives me strength." Please don't miss this. Don't depend on others to lift you up because God has given you the power and anointing to do it for yourself.

Sinclair, it is interesting to note how our culture believes it cannot look for community support. Your last sentence, "Don't depend on others to lift you up because God has given you the power and anointing to do it for yourself." brings this point home. The tenet is linked to the notion of pulling one's self up by his/her own boot straps. It is very much a part of our thinking, and I believe contributes a helluva a lot of the fuel, or the ingredients for weak minds that become demented minds in this imposed cultural isolation of ours! I believe this subtly contributes to depression. Nevertheless, this presence in American social and intellectual consciousness is more than enough reason to study our beliefs, and eventually be transformed by a renewing of our minds! - Gregory E.
