BEAUTY QUEEN

LESA WINEGLASS SMALLS

“Oh, my goodness!! Your beauty is a breath; a breathing technique learned from perceptions within the heart and soul of divination. The breath it (the intangible) comes from the place it returns to: the imagination, a body of truths, and the heartfelt response to a woman's beauty and the beauty of a woman in the world.” - Gregory E. Woods

LEGACY

“Anita Collins is such a present, and impressive woman it seems from the image of her patiently teaching a younger woman. The image is part of my vision: a system of Elders creating legacy through story, teaching, revelation knowledge, and simple sharing in a ceremonial, and casual settings.” - Dawn Wolf

GULLAH GEECHEE NATION IN 2010

"There are not enough people in attendance at this conference on St. Helena Island for the Gullah Geechee nation. We need to deepen our Africaness to the point that we impact African nations with our voice in Congress, and corporations hesitate implementing certain policies in Africa for fear of our reactions. But we ain't there yet." -Gregory E. Woods

Gullah Geechee folk, Queen Quet & Capt. Legree of St Helena Island

Gullah Geechee folk: Queen Quet & Capt. Legree of St Helena Island 2010

"I had too much Indian blood to have skin this dark which was my childhood dream until the Phillippine's sun baked me reddish brown... This is a powerful image for me. I used to hunt feverishly for recordings of the Gullah dialect and songs.  The Library of Congress had old recordings that I listened to intently for hours on end.  It connected me to the Africa I had come from reminding me that the soil of Africa was a tangible thing I could walk upon if I visited their island.  But looking at Queen Quet's picture I am planning a trip to visit, and meet her."
