Shaving

My father very casually, yet seriously, gave me sage advise one day. I wore my hair long for many years. In fact, I didn't cut my hair from the age of 14 until somewhere in my early thirties. I didn't shave either. Not that I had a lot of facial hair. I didn't.

Daddy said, "You should shave one day. It depends on the job. Because white men for many reasons are uncomfortable, intimidated by Black men with hair on their face... It could hold you back!"

We had a long and engaging conversation in the foyer and the kitchen that day. I learned a lot of subtle things that, as he predicted, paid off. - Gregory E. WoodsNovember 3, 2013
