Pity when someone admits to being a hunter. Americans, or rather Westerners, leap to the conclusion that it is evil, and wrong for that person to hunt. The immediate assumption is the hunter is probably a sports hunter rather than a subsistence hunter. There is another type of hunter rarely, if ever mentioned. The ceremonial hunter. There is a skill set required of each type of hunter. Sooner or later sports hunters have an experience that closes the gaps in their understanding of Nature, her laws, and the nature of things. It almost always involves animals in relationship to the land, and the spirit of the hunter. The experience is an exchange most people, and particularly activists, don't have because the relationship between their heads and their hearts is not a relationship. It is a contest, a battle of sorts. Hunting, at some point, becomes the activity that connects the spiritual world with the physical world, and introduces the sports hunter (at times) and the regular hunter to what the ceremonial hunter is intimately linked to. Hunting is a sacred act, or it was for the most of history, even amongst the Europeans at one time before the Church took prominence and corralled the sacred. - Alowan Chanteh Inyan Wichasha 3.26.13 | |||
