In John Edward's presidential bid in 2008 three related things stand out: His lover was made public, his wife Elizabeth was dying of cancer, and his family fractured under the public scrutiny. Much credibility was irretrievable with the news of his wife's declining health while he was getting laid somewhere else. There was much ado about something, but what stands out in my mind was a look in her eye, and a word his wife said.
