HOW A MAN THINKS

Tearing Down Your Barrier
Rev. Dr. Sinclair Grey III

While doing my ministerial internship about twelve years ago, I would often stop at a local gas station to fill up my car with gas and get a soda before driving 90 miles to church. Each time I stopped at this particular gas station, I would converse with a man who was down on his luck. Simply put - he lost his job, his family, his income, and his home. As you can imagine, this brother had every right to feel sorry for himself, but he didn't. Each week, he would utter the words, "Ain't got time for barriers of self-pity."

In this spiritual journey, I want to share with you a few lessons I learned from my interactions with this brother about tearing down your barrier. The first lesson learned is that you may not control what happens to you, but you can definitely control how you respond to it. As my mentor would say, 'control what you can, and don't worry about the stuff you can't.' Here's the Sinclair remix. Unless you work on the barrier within you, you won't be able to deal with the barrier outside of you. The second lesson learned about tearing down barriers is to adjust your thinking to match your words. What do I mean? Speak in the positive and refuse to utter the negative. As long as you keep talking about your barrier, your barrier becomes that much stronger. Check this out - tell your barrier that it's coming down.

When God was speaking to the Israelites through the prophet Isaiah He said, "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me, says the Lord." Please don't miss this last lesson. With God operating in you and through you, there's nothing too impossible for you. Understand that God is bigger than any barrier you'll face. In a real sense, your barrier is no match for you because your barrier doesn't know how big your God is. That's my word for you. Whenever you face moments of uncertainty, keep your head up because God will take care of you. Tear down your barrier and see what God has in store for you.
