fear in Marketing: a history lesson

On this day Nov. 5, 1956 The Nat King Cole Show debuted on NBC.

[[ Nat King Cole, the internationally celebrated singer and pianist... was the first African-American man to have a television show. It started as a 15-minute program on NBC and expanded to a half-hour in July 1957.

The show was seen as controversial for giving such national exposure to an African-American artist. Many of Cole’s fellow artists, from Ella Fitzgerald and Eartha Kitt to Mel Torme and Peggy Lee, performed for union scale or even for no pay, in order to help the show to save money.

Nonetheless, the Nat King Cole Show was forever hampered by a lack of national sponsorship... The show continued until Dec. 17, 1959… [Cole] once spoke about the lack of sponsors of his show by saying, “Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark.” ]]

TV HISTORY

Sophia Loren defied the elements and forced without effort sensuality into a sphere of  influence that whispered to the Goddess buried beneath the Vatican. - Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories 8.3.13
During a live performance of the Oscars in 1957 Jayne Mansfield's ample breasts were exposed, caught on camera at the table Sophia Loren shared with the star. It was called the first 'wardrobe malfunction'. Deliberately, Valerie Perrine showed her breasts during the PBS show, Steambath, 4, May 1973. In May 1972 the actress posed for Playboy magazine. August 1981 Valerie Perrine was on the cover of Playboy. During a Super Bowl performance in 2004 Janet Jackson's nipple came out of her outfit. In a blink it was out, and most people missed it. But, still pictures came out showing her full breast with fancy nipple jewelry and a round nipple protruding. So many women were outraged to the point one lady (most likely white) filed claim in Federal court on behalf of millions of Americans suing for millions of dollars for the 'outrage, anger, embarrassment and serious injury'!

Jada Fire holding one breast.
Blacks, by the millions, were enraged that the system excused the white singer, Justin Timberlake, from the scandal despite the movements of the dance. Men. I never heard a man complain about Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, but I know there were men upset their children saw Janet Jackson's nipple and her breast. Underneath it all there is a general and shared disgust of women's nipples. It is a cultural thing not shared by every culture upon the globe. In American culture a woman's nipple and her breasts are alternately deplored, praised, or the object of envy, lust, and subject to gross alterations. There is shame embedded in statements made by famous women denouncing, or down playing the significance, and the power of their breasts making declarations that they are not defined by their breasts, or their capacity to birth, and nurture. Is that the attitude of an elitist? Yes? No? Maybe. What is that?

There is an enormous amount of money making pornographic movies for sale, and the film makers, actors, and crew in the porn business are making good incomes. The internet has shot the profitability of porn beyond anything imagined 20 years ago, and a lot of ill-equipped, and technically unsophisticated men, and women are sitting in their houses making money selling sex. A lot of women are more than willing to make a few bucks posing nude or performing some sexual act for the camera to make cash, and a name for themselves. The selling of sex extends into the crime of sex trafficking  and the number of boys, and girls and women stolen to service men in the United States, and other countries is staggering. Pimps are appealing to young men and women in every economic class, and the pimp mentality has cheapened the value of women and subjugated the importance, and sacredness of punany to crude measures, and in some cases, unspeakable degradation. In the midst of all of this whoredom runs its trails through many a church. One of the best places for a whore to pick up a whore is in the church. Alongside all of this is the current generation's women seeking fame as an end unto itself and willing to do anything to be famous, seen, and remembered. Somehow, a number of famous actresses subscribe to leaking video of themselves having sex with someone to enhance their notoriety, and further their careers.

We love our illusions. We, Americans, are elitists uncomfortable with examining our myths, and pretentious enough to be comfortable with our myths irregardless of the damage done to our lives by the spirits we uphold. ~ Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 8.3.13

This picture was taken at a time actors did not take pictures sitting in bathrooms. If bathrooms were shown on television there'd be no toilet present. This was provocative, daring, and to many immoral a stance for a woman to take. - Dawn Wolf, Keeper of Stories 8.3.13

The VALLEY GIRL Show

Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, left, with Jesse Draper.
Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg (l.) interviewed by host, Jesse Draper December 2011

I never would've learned of Jesse Draper, a former Nickelodeon actress, if I wasn't reading up on Sheryl Sandberg. I am not a fan, or an advocate of Nickelodeon. It may be good for white and privileged children, but it wrecks havoc upon Black children. Little good comes from that influence has been my observation. But, that aside I am attracted to the women who push and succeed in business, and white women, and children of color who make their marks in the business world are of interest to me in part because I was not geared towards business acumen, and because something deep within me believes the integrity of business will be stirred, shifted, and will come alive through women and the next generation of children entrepreneurs.

Growing up in the worlds I did left me uninformed and uninterested in corporate America until I landed in a moderately successful and highly creative band, and the conservative elements of the US inserted their proverbial foot up the tail end of creative progression and began to cut funding for the arts. Pushing our band from the local Washington DC scene to the national college circuit proved our ineptness in business, and revealed our profound ignorance of what is fundamental to business development: sales.

There is a saying amongst Black business men I should not say in public, but Jesse Draper embodies the reason for the saying. Her father is a wealthy and influential venture capitalist. With her father as an example, her mentor, and $50,000 of her own money she invested in the development of her Internet series, The Valley Girl Show, in 2008.

She plays a ditzy dumb blond character on her show interviewing prominent business people, many of whom are connected to her father, Timothy C. Draper, for a tiny core audience of 15,000 focused in Silicon Valley. In 2011 she expanded her enterprise from her website (valleygirl.tv) to television screens in restaurants like Taco Bell, and licensed her show to other websites like Glam.com.

This is important to notice. She has been able to get powerful white people into her studio like Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Understand the significance of this. Ms. Draper is 29 years old, white and politically connected by her father to the highest offices in the country, and thus the globe with an initial and tiny core audience, a vision of a book series, and by 2011 was not yet making a profit to support her staff, and self.

Given these facts about one woman why is relationship important?

Brad Pitt Says He Has Face Blindness

By Sadie Gennis | TV Guide

I never heard of prosopagnosia until, as an invited musician to a composers showcase, I listened to a composer interpret the condition. His artistry pulled me into the condition, and the dance interpreting the composition brought it home, and I was absorbed in what that state of being is like. It took me a little less than half of an hour to revive myself from the slope I'd descended to see this phenomenon, and later talk with the composer at length about the effect of his music.

I understand Brad Pitts' dilemma, and marvel at his ability to be where he is in his life. That is an incredible act of power! - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories

Prosopagnosia is rare....very rare. I had a classmate whose mother had it. I went to school with her daughter from second-grade through high school. The daughter and I were very close and even dated when we were in high school. The daughter married a hometown friend of mine and I was in the wedding. He and I were both recently commissioned naval officers at Annapolis. So we were both in uniform. Mrs. V. thought that I was just a random classmate in the wedding. She asked me, "Have you seen (Anonymous) I know he is here." I replied, "Everyday in the mirror." She had trouble recognizing her own children (she had five) sometimes. If Brad doesn't have trouble recognizing his own kids or the different people in a flim....If he could tell George Clooney from Matt Damon in Oceans 12 (Other than by honing in on their clothes) he hasn't got it. He is just uninterested or distracted. This is fine. If I met as many people on a routine basis as he does I wouldn't want to remember all of them either. - Anonymous

CARRIE ANN INABA: engagement

"One of the challenges of watching television is not to become cynical, and hard hearted. In the wake of the loss of moral compasses it is impossible for immature people to navigate through television programming and advertisements and find themselves, and have a solid grasp on the complexity of American life. They usually are tightly wrapped in mummy cloth with too many pieces of truth, and lies, and not enough analytical abilities, education or discernment and no control over the images threading through their minds into action. One of the losses of the soul for many American viewers is the profound conditions of covenant within marriage, and the ritual of covenant now dead to Christian practice and theology, but fundamental to the relationships between men in the old days of the nomadic Hebrew tribes, and important to women because it was part of a woman's survival mechanisms..."  ©Gregory E. Carrie Ann Inaba kissing fiance on Regis & Kelly show after his proposal & her acceptance !!!!

Carrie Ann Inaba's engagement story was a beautiful surprise on the Regis & Kelly show. If I hadn’t learned how to watch the Regis & Kelly show I would’ve missed it. For most of its time on television the show turned me off. It was a show for older white middle class Americans to be amongst their own with their white hair entertained by someone who reflected their value system. Every group deserves their own and I wouldn’t begrudge them that. It just wasn't for me until a few years ago when Kathy Lee Gifford was co-hosting and her effervescence caught me up in Tinker Bell dust and her enthusiasm, and the fun she exuded tasted good. It felt good. Regis Philbin himself remained uninteresting though not as dull, conservative and predictable as Wheel of Fortune host, Pat Sajak until Regis' wife, Joy, hosted the show one day. My God! I couldn't see the man until I saw his wife!

Elegant, fine, beautiful, articulate, intelligent, supportive, understanding, cultivated married to a man who, for me, symbolized an era, and body of white male energy cloaked in the smart sophistication white men enjoyed in Jim Crow days. Flaunting their masculinity, and silently condoning socially inappropriate modalities that did not benefit Black people, for example, Black men had to employ defense mechanisms to psychological combat the social expectations of their manhood. In the light of these times, the 21st century, simple-minded people cannot grasp what I’m saying, but it takes a man to see another man through the woman who married him. She carries the story of who he is at the deeper levels that are behind the image he projects into the mind of another, and the world, if he is a celebrity. ©Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories

SOCIAL CHANGE

reality stars Nene Leakes, Sheree Whitfield, Lisa Wu Hartwell, Kandi Burruss, & Kim Zolciak of Atlanta !!!!

http://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_7229.shtml

The tendency is to shove 'reality stars' into a dusty drawer. They come across, more often than not, as assholes, or stupid, insipid, or shallow. The first 'reality show' was in the 1970's, and the outrage of the public centered around the violation of privacy.  The networks backed off, and new technologies were packaged and sold simplifying life, and creating an elite class mentality amongst regular citizens. Laws were passed that slowly eroded the rights of citizens while jobs leaving the country were barely noticed by a population distracted by their pride in their ignorance, and the comforts of modern life. Presidents performed on stage for three, and four decades before a public that needed entertainment, and soft sells that matched their education levels. Gossips replace introspective, and hard news analysis, and reality show stars were studied from head to toe, and gossiped about to the distraction of a populace smug in the clusterfuck of their existence, and place in the world as a super power.

Many things occured during the Great Sleep. Roused from their sleep millions of US citizens found themselves poor, unemployable, and scantly clad in the images they dreamed of as reality. The Earth, our Mother is changing her form, and the state of mind of millions of US citizens is so profoundly locked in a dysfunctional paradigm they cannot see with clarity.

What is your spiritual responsibility in these times?
