50 means the age of change for women

 · By

If we were to take a look back in time, say, 20 years ago, we would instantly notice that women seemed to enter a period of domestic bliss once they reached 50. With their children grown-up and even settled down, their lives became a peaceful, much-welcome routine. Today, ladies in their late ‘40s and early ‘50s are the most eager to change everything about their life that was once worth all the effort to hang on to, specialists are telling the Daily Mail.

50 is a dangerous age for women – and it’s become so increasingly over the past years – because they now feel they want and need more from life than what they have. This also explains why the rate of divorce is soaring for ladies who fit in this age segment and, surprisingly enough, in 65 percent of the cases, it’s the wife who instigates the divorce proceedings, as a new survey in the US comes to show. Women, it seems, are too bored with their life and it’s just now that they come to realize it and want to change it.

“Divorce statistics show women in the 50-plus age group leading the call to ditch their marriages and remarry, or set up home on their own, or go travelling, or start new careers. American psychologist Louann Brizendine, whose book ‘The Female Brain’ maps the key changes our minds and emotions undergo at different life stages, points out that 65 per cent of divorces after 50 are now initiated by women.” Dr. Pam Spurr says in the Daily Mail piece.

Although these changes and the altered perspective on life could be easily explained by “a seismic hormonal shift,” as Dr. Spurr adds, chances are women also grow tired of their old routine and simply want a change – be it for the better or worse does not really matter, as long as it’s something new. Cases of financially-independent ladies who have ditched their former lifestyles completely are quite frequent, the Mail piece points out. Others, either not able to see to their every dream or not bold enough to make such drastic changes, simply file for divorce, change careers, or choose to travel/move abroad.

Either way, 50 years old is the universal threshold when the need for these changes begins to be felt, all experts agree.
