“The flippant way of acting like tobacco and smoking are so
passé, and wrong is disingenuous. The flippant way Americans like to toss aside
major parts of their history is not fascinating. Interesting, yes, but it
speaks volumes about the lack of something important and fundamental to
existence. The story of Tobacco, and why it is sacred to us Native folk, and
why it was gifted to the European was lost from the beginning of the
relationship.
Today as a global power, and a young civilization the
incredible leaps made from one extreme to another on major things like smoking,
care for the pets, the environment, racial tolerance, etc. leave millions of
people feeling trampled upon because the intimate and important steps in
between those leaps is ignored. The dominant culture seems oblivious to what it
feels like to be in the middle of these gaps, and is often astounded and
incredulous at the assertions just made. It doesn’t change the facts of what it
feels like to be disrespected by a group that doesn’t know it is disrespectful.”
