When South Africa's last apartheid government announced the release from prison of Nelson Mandela and his fellow activists, the news was welcomed with great fanfare around the world. Earlier generations of Africa's independence activists never received that kind of recognition. Kenya's Dedan Kimathi, a legendary Mau Mau freedom fighter, was labelled a terrorist by the British colonial administration and eventually convicted and hanged in Nairobi. Dedan Kimathi was among those who inspired Nelson Mandela and his fight against apartheid but their experiences were vastly different.
BBC's Ruth Nesoba reports from Nairobi.
