Mereana Taki's teachings: Tikanga Maori & Rahui

Tikanga Maori and Rahui

Since the birth of Great Mother Earth, Maori have established Ritenga ~ values and first principles as kaupapa, to guide their actions. Those principles are applied through an encoded reliable system of customs and protocols gathered under the name of Tikanga Maori. These provide a tested and reliable method of doing the “right” thing, thus ensuring the wellbeing of their iwi including unborn descendants. The expression Kaitiakitanga refers to the conservation and protection of the taonga of Great Mother and her body ~ the Land and environs. According to their role of kaitiaki, the Maori institutes the use of Rahui (Grandfather Sun in session, gathered) to assure the sustainability and the replenishment of resource systems (the WellBEing of Great Mother in balance and harmony).

Rahui is the placing of 'restriction' over an area, event, person, a moratorium prohibiting the access. The rahui aims at preventing the overexploitation, the degradation or the collapse of a resource as well as the pollution of the environment. The rahui can be lifted when the resource is replenished. The rahui is 'lifted off' with whakawaerea (clearing) by kaumatua as Elder Kin. -Mereana Taki
