Someone once told me, "Enlightenment would cripple the American economy!"
As I age I believe him. Look at all the occupations connected to mental health, the military, industrial and prison industries. There can't be a deep commitment to resolving those social issues because the money and jobs are supporting millions of people. It is the distance between them and poverty. The deeper an honest probe into this illustration the more fragile our existence appears because judgment has to nestle alongside any justice, or equality, not love. Community development can't develop because the criminal element must be the divisive force, the tension between neighbors that harbors the fears that tear at the fabric of unity.
Unraveling this is painful, but it is an honest assessment of the crudeness of the American spirit. - Gregory E. Woods, Keeper of Stories 5.4.13
