another Medicine Wheel teaching

from Arni Lightning

God’s Purpose

I have spoken with thousands of people who view their past and present failures as guarantees God will never be able to complete His purpose in their lives. For these people—indeed for most of us—a call to obedience seems a virtual seal against victory, for perfect obedience eludes them. But note the link this prayer forges between the heart and the intent to obey. What I want of God’s will counts more than the achievement of what I've done.

1 Samuel 16:7 says, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God is not as concerned with our perfection as He is with our direction.

Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king. (Nehemiah 1:11 NIV)

NEZ PERCE story: East Country Boy

There were two brothers. The elder took for his wife an eastern maiden, and they lived in the East Country. They were four, the husband and wife, the younger brother and the wife's father.

It developed that the younger brother became homesick. He would say to himself, "Ah me! ['qi' ttsayqan] I wish I could go to the West Country now."

The woman overheard him, and she told her father, "My husband's brother is homesick. Just now I overheard him say, 'Ah me! I wish I could go to the West Country now.'"

Her father said to her, "Then why do you let him pine for his homeland? Take him!"

The woman then told her husband, "This is what my father said to me."

The husband replied, "It is for us, then, to take him." So they wrapped him in elk hide and mounted him, or rather packed him on an elk. They told him, "You positively must not struggle to free yourself even though you will hear a great din. You must not peep from the hide."

He replied to them, "That I certainly will not do."

Then the father told them, "You are to cross over five mountains, and only there he may look about, but not on this side. You are to take wild sheep, elk, buffalo and moose.' Then they wrapped him in the hide and mounted him. They went.

Now the younger brother heard from within the constant thundering ["xim-, xim-"] of the herd all along the way. It was particularly noisy at the crossings, because there the buffalo and others would lose one another in the crowding. It was very, very noisy. Then he said to himself as they went along, "Oh, how I wish, oh, how I wish that I could see then even once." And so he gnawed a hole.

Meanwhile at home the old man kept count of their days spent in travel. "They must have reached there by this time." They crossed three mountains and were at the fourth. Then, again the younger brother heard them. Oh, the thundering of the herd ["xim-xim-"] He gnawed his way through-and saw them. Oh! In droves there were the buffalo wild sheep, moose, and elk. but, because he saw them, they ran homeward pell-mell. The ran wildly and arrived back whence they had started.

The old man said to himself, "I told them, 'Positively do not let him see them; positively he must not peep,' and now he has disobeyed." They all returned, and they stayed there for a long time.

One day the woman overheard him again, "Ah me! I wish I could arrive in the West Country now." The woman went to her father and said to him, "He is longing for h homeland very deeply again."

The old man said to her, "If you wish to take him again, then mount him on a buffalo bull, one which has tough and very thick skin between the shoulder blades. He will not bite through that easily."

The woman told this to her husband, and again they said to him, "We are taking you only once more, and you know already what will happen if you see the herd even once."

He said to them now, "Positively I will not again become impatient; even if I want see them, I will absolutely not struggle."

"Yes," the old man replied, "yes, you speak good words. You are to go now." The wrapped him in a buffalo hide and mounted him on a bull. Thus they went again. Now he heard from within the thundering ['xim-, xim-"] of the herd of buffalo, wild sheep, and others as they traveled along.

Again he thought, "I wish I could only see them. I wish I could only see them." The again, going along he began to gnaw a hole. The hide was thick and tough. At home the old man kept calculating the time that they had been gone. "They have reached there," he thought. "I wish they would cross the last mountain because then they could have those buffalo, wild sheep, elk, and moose for all time. They have gone for the last time absolutely. If he returns, never again will I send them, even if he pines for home."

Now they arrived at the last mountain; and as they crossed the younger brother heard the thundering ["xim-, xim-"] of the herd behind him. He exerted himself to the utmost and gnawed his way through. And he saw them. They were crossing in this direction; but, oh, they came to a sudden halt, turned around at once, and ran never again to be brought back. All the elk, wild sheep, moose, and buffalo stayed there in the East Country. Had they crossed the fifth mountain, they would have remained in the West Country for all rime. That is the reason why there have never been moose, wild sheep, buffalo and elk west of the mountain divide.

WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH?

Kagney Laporte
November 26, 2012

There is a warrior ceremony I've written about, and planted into the lives of young men that is important today in the dim light of Trayvon Martin's murder. It was given to me by a white man I befriended in the mountains of Virginia about a mile from the West Virginia border. He claims no Indian blood, but he was adopted by the late Ojibwa medicine man Bear Heart as his grandson, and Bear Heart, who'd been invited to teach there at Wolf Run, had passed a simple ritual for my friend to initiate white men of his ilk into manhood. It is simple, but challenging.

Four (4) men sit in each of the four directions. With a talking feather each are asked to ponder from their direction, and respond in turn to four questions.

  • East - What is honor?
  • South - How do you protect the innocent?
  • West - Who is your enemy?
  • North - When is enough enough?

Leaving to DIE

In the last years of the last century I suddenly disappeared from everyone in my life including my family from whom my light is fed. I had to tell my mother because Mommy was, and has always been deeply connected to my spirit. To physically leave without a word to her was unthinkable. She would and did call my spirit, and in answer I left a book, "The Alchemist"  with her, and an understanding that if she read it she would understand her first-born.

Leaving was a drastic step made without pondering. It was a simple act of power, a reaction to a simple disappointment compounded by many weights. I was in the middle of a phone call. A sales call. The phone shut off. I couldn't pay the bill. In that one moment everything within me crashed and I heard myself say, "I can't take this shit no more."

I was in a daze, a stupor. I vaguely remember what I did next, but I do recall a bag in my hand with a few items including some books, clothes, a knife...  Days passed me. I know I went places, slept somewhere, felt some things, walked, but I cannot draw them up in my mind. I cried a lot for the woman I knew would forever live within me, but was not able to 'see' me, and for my children, at the time, lost to me. I was in a strange kind of darkness, but a deeper light came from somewhere, as was prophesied by Old Man, and I received the outcome of the massive amounts of spiritual work I'd put in for many years. It was mind blowing what came and still comes to me. That kind of death was worth the birth. - Gregory E. Woods, 2.22.13

a Medicine Wheel of a Shaman
from Bear Warrior

Elder's Meditation of the Day - December 28, 2012

"I believe that being a medicine man, more than anything else, is a state of mind, a way of looking at and understanding this earth, a sense of what it is all about."
-- Lame Deer, LAKOTA

The Medicine Wheel explains different ways of looking at the world. The four directions are the East, the South, the West, and the North. In the East is the view of the eagle. The eagle flies high and sees the earth from that point of view. The South is the direction of the mouse. Moving on the earth, the mouse will not see what the eagle sees. Both the eagle and the mouse see the truth. The West is the direction of the bear. The bear will see different from the mouse and the eagle. From the North comes the point of view of the bison. To be a Medicine Man you must journey through all points of view and develop the mind to see the interconnectedness of all four directions. This takes time, patience, and an open mind. Eventually, you understand there is only love.

Great Spirit, today, allow my mind to stay open

POTAWATOMI STORY: gift of the Medicine Wheel

Creation Story - Potawatomi

Anishnabe found himself alone on earth. The Creator told him to give everything a name, and he did this, accompanied by a wolf. He discovered that only he, among the many species, was alone, without a mate, and he was lonely.

He traveled to the Great Lakes and while searching, heard a beautiful song coming across the water. The woman's voice was singing that she was making a home for him. He fell in love with the voice and the song. In the days that followed, he learned how to cross the water and finally came to a lodge facing west. There lived a beautiful woman and her father, the Firekeeper.

This was the first union - Anishabe and the Fire Keeper's Daughter. It determined the roles of men and women in marriage. They had four sons, who when they were grown traveled to the four directions of the earth. The son who traveled north had a hard journey, but learned that the melting snow cleansed Mother Earth. Because of the snow, the color for North is white. This son married the daughter of the Spirit of the North and was given sweet grass, the first gift of Mother Earth. It is kept in a braid like a mother's hair.

The second son traveled east, into the yellow of the rising sun. He learned that fire is the essence of life and gained in knowledge of the Creator. He married the daughter of the Spirit of the East, and was given tobacco to use in prayer, to communicate with the Creator. The third son went south, which is the woman's direction from which comes seeds and other things that give life. Red, the color of life's blood, is the color for south. He married the Spirit of the South's daughter and was given the gift of cedar, which is used to cleanse and purify the home and prepare for food.

The fourth son went West, toward the mountains. Marrying the Spirit of the West's daughter, he was given sage and learned that the setting sun represents the circle of life and its cycle. The color for West is black, for the dark time, and the sage, a strong purifier, is to keep illness away.

Smoke from the cedar and sage is fanned upward with an eagle feather because the eagle once saved the Indian people when the Creator would have destroyed them. The eagle told the Creator there were faithful people on earth, and was sent out each morning to see if the smoke still rose from the lodges of those good people. Fanning the smoke with the eagle feather symbolizes the eagle delivering the message to the Creator that his people are still there and still believe. - from archives of

Cherokee Medicine Teachings from a Healer of the Tsalagi

Facebook Gregory E. Woods: Cherokee Medicine Teachings from a Healer of the Tsalagi:

"While there are four major directions the Cherokee believe in the seven sacred directions the seventh of  which is the center and is the sacred fire within a person. The East is red representing victory, power, and new birth and spring. The West is black and represents death or the end of life like autumn. The North represents Failure and disappointment. The South represents Peace and healing and was White (sometimes yellow was used but was supposed to represent white). Yellow represented Above. Below was Brown. And Green was for the direction classified as the Sacred Fire Within." Moon Red Thunder

AFRICAN NATIVE-AMERICAN STORY: 9/11

December 30, 2001

Rev. Sanders

Third Street Church of God
1246 New Jersey Ave.
Washington DC

Dear Rev. Sanders,

Intelligence, responsibility for actions and decisions, honest assessments, and humility must be in an operative mode. In its stead a mad, idiotic buying and selling of American flags have replaced the natural response to someone having us by the balls. The nation is living in fear, seeing terrorist in every son and daughter of Ishmael, a bomb in every loud sound, a conspiracy in every brown mouth whispering. This is where we are right now, as a nation.

Unknown assailants have us, as a country and as individuals, by the balls in a vice grip and we are play-acting and posturing like our national heroes (our lone wolf heroes, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Cool Hand Luke, etc.) and President Bush’s image of self, John Wayne? As fathers, mothers, leaders, a group, cities, states, and a country we should be alarmed, shamed, enraged that our President endangers his constituents by disallowing an honest assessment, any revelatory discourse about our foreign policies, actions and approaches in Africa and the Middle East, that fueled the dark intent of the architects of the 9-11 bombings. In its stead we swagger patriotically into combat with an ill-defined enemy leaving the country vulnerable and largely in the dark, ignorant about what is really going on, and seemingly blind to our truths as a nation and a force in global war and politics. A moronic idea to fight and eradicate evil with bombs, technology, and solders has become a rallying cry.

From the November elections to the present Bush isolated and distinguished himself by refusing to participate in the international conference on racism, disregarded the decades of research and findings on global warming, pollution and the obvious solutions. He displays disrespect for the earth and a callous intent towards the poverty of other nations, and he supports any atrocity committed by Israel.

In New York, assassins killed 6,867 (including the missing and the presumed dead), collapsed 450,000 tons of concrete, steel and glass to the earth, destroying in two horrific hours more office space than exists in all of San Francisco’s financial district. 61 countries lost citizens in the bombings. 8 Islamic countries lost citizens. 23% of Americans tried to find out if they had lost someone in the September 11th attack on American soil. 3 U.S. citizens were murdered in anti-Muslim hate attacks. Total monetary damages from the attacks exceeded $70 billion. And into the dark vanished the illusions of American life. The smoke left us with choices, options and history. History with neighbors is almost always exposed to light. A conflict ripe with dangers has within its very make up problem areas to be examined and viewed from various angles with intelligence and detachment.

The issues of race in America are working in the midst of our terror. “Our shit don’t stink, and a need to feel good about themselves, no matter what was done to anyone else” are two elements of the paradigm of white racism exposed and silently challenged by people of color worldwide. Our court-appointed president asks the nation to be patriotic, suspend introspection on the sequence of events that led up to the bombings. He asks Americans and other countries to choose sides and fight on the side of right, freedom and democracy from the point of illusion of who we think we are as a nation, a corporation, and a force in the global community.

Our government excuses any evil, any terror Israel initiates and inflicts on people and no one is supposed to be ‘pissed off’ about this? For fifty years we have bombed countries: Japan, China/Korea (1950’s), Guatemala (54), Indonesia ’58, Cuba (between ‘56-’60), Guatemala ’60, Congo ’64, Laos ‘64-’73, Vietnam ‘61-’73, Cambodia ’69, Guatemala ’67, Libya (’86 we killed his daughter trying to assassinate their leader), Granada ’83, El Salvador & Nicaragua the 1980’s, Panama, Iraq, Sudan ’98 (bombing a chemical plant, An error, We compensated no one.), and Afghanistan in 1999. A few days before the attack on New York guess what we were doing in Iraq? We killed eight people bombing the country!

If the United States of America did not profit from the drug trade, facilitate its manufacturer and distribution, train and create assassins, topple governments, install dictators, commit acts of terror against nations, kill innocents by the thousands, consume such an obscene percentage of the world’s resources, break treaties, lust for war and conflict, sell weapons, technology, and ideas to countries for a season and eventually betray or use them for our own benefit right would be on our side.

If history did not record the chemical warfare used against the First Nations People, or the massacre of innocents at Wounded Knee or Sand Creek, the undeclared war on the Seminoles and the Africans in Florida or record hundreds of broken treaties, the murders or terrorist acts done in the name of the Christ Jesus and Progress, I would wave the flag and take up arms against the schools of terror active in the world today. But I cannot. We created the conditions that led to the September 11th bombing. This country is covered in blood. Like its president the heart is full of war and the mouth is full of pleas for peace and reconciliation and the eyes tell the nature of this dichotomy. Patriotism? We respond to the terror we created with patriotism? Patriotism is not a defense or an offensive. It does not prevent death or shield against terrorism; it merely denies and obscures.

Envy and the larceny of economics has tailored our relationship with many nations alongside a deeply felt urgency to make freedom a part of the world’s people. Racism, commerce, progress, and war are energy foods of a restless nation consumed with the fire of war, dominance and the acquisition of things. We are a complex society. Study is required to fathom the myth of America, the reality of America and the stories of America, the contradictions of America.

Our reaction to September 11 has insured that we will be attacked again and succeeded in sustaining the energy that fuels contempt for our ways and approaches to interacting with the rest of the world. We are allowing an opportunity to heal many wounds and thus usher in a profound healing into the world. This moment will escape detection by most Americans because nationally we reside within a Medicine Wheel of Darkness and we are wealthy, mighty in war and unapologetic.

The Medicine Wheels teach that the circle or the wheel is the religion of the living. All things seek the Circle. The deer, the fox, the dog sleep in a circle. The Womb is an opening, a circle. The world is a circle. The Zero Teachers passed down the greatest of all discoveries: The Zero to the People many centuries ago. The Christian’s creation story says God spoke the world into existence giving their God a mouth from which came the Word. The mouth, the Womb, the entrance to homes of the Ant People, the Mole People, the Snake and the Spider Peoples, an embrace, the nest of birds, the circular path of our lives from birth to resurrection is the Way of, the understanding of the Circle. The paths of the Four Winds move in circles from the North, the South, the East and the West. The Sacred Wheels are teachers, mirrors. Lies circulate around the worlds. Truth circulates within the breast of a knowing soul with courage to speak into the face of opposition. Truth speaks from the eyes and the lives of our children who mirror and mimic the veracity of our beliefs, the stances we hold in the world and the concepts we live by as adults negotiating in the worlds of politics, commerce, development, war, parenting, religion and power. The powers, the mentality, the people who govern America, the governing forces in American spirit and daily living obviously revolve around the Medicine Wheel of Darkness.

South on the wheel of darkness is greed—for physical things, for the manifestation of ideas into the physical through unworthy manipulation and accumulation through theft and, often, abuse.
West envies other’s dreams wanting to take what other people have accomplished.
North is the fixation of ideals, the inability to grow, rigidity of perception so that you no longer see the oneness of life but only your own limited position within it.
East of the wheel is the need for manipulation and control and jealousy

“Their [the white men’s] Wise Ones said we might have their religion, but when we tried to understand it we found that there were too many kinds of religion among white men for us to understand, and that scarcely two white men agreed which was the right one to learn. This bothered us a good deal until we saw that the white man did not take his religion any more seriously than he did his laws, and that he kept both of them just behind him, like Helpers, to use when they might do him good in his dealings with strangers. These were not our ways. We kept the laws we made and lived our religion. We have never been able to understand the white man, who fools nobody but himself.”—Plenty Coups, Absaroka

Over a hundred years have passed since Plenty Coups voiced the common observation of Native peoples worldwide who were forced into encounters with white people. This is a pivotal moment in history, ripe for healing Wheels to be activated. If ever there was a time to repent of the evils we have wrought, as a nation, it is now. The time to allow nations and their millions to emote, to tell their stories and show how our policies and assumptions have affected, destroyed and altered their lives, is now. Today is the moment to listen. Today is the time to ask for forgiveness and allow healing in others and with our soul. We need to be responsible for what our hands have wrought. Waving the American flag doesn’t mean a damn thing. It is a moronic and weak gesture; shallow before the truths we chose to ignore; pale before our self-righteousness. We cannot expect to live, as we are accustomed to for very long. We have dug our grave and created the means to make our demise a reality at the hands of the Frankenstein’s we created over the decades. Who are we alive in the fields of death and acquisition we own and deny? What are we not learning from the ancient Egyptians and the other nations that reigned for centuries? We are a pitifully young nation; teenagers in fact, making gross acts of power, projecting ourselves into dark places those great entities sought to avoid.

There is a powerful and effective Wheel I have used in the dynamics of my own living development: A Medicine Wheel of Apperception & Balance. I ache and I mourn for my country and her predisposition for war: war on poverty, AIDS, alcoholism, drugs, black people, heart disease, terrorism, etc. I ache to share this Wheel but the nature of the beast cannot recognize itself. If Recognition does not take place the Wheel of Apperception & Balance is ineffective. What our Heart needs our thinking [our Mind] cannot see to accept. Let me grieve now for what will come to pass.

1st Sacred Medicine teaching of CEDAR shared by Snowbird Black Feather

"Some things used to not be public knowledge, but the times and the people in these times need help and we are finding that people outside of our traditions need our 'medicine teachings.'  Snowbird Black Feather, and I met online (these are strange things to admit) and shared a lot of stories, and insights over the past few years.  One of the many discussions about Native spirituality inspired her and she put together simple medicine teachings together for the people who needed to know these things.  There are four medicines in our traditions.  Snowbird made it simple, and I am going to share each of the four, in her words and mine in a simple fashion."  -Dawn Wolf

Cedar (Keezhik)
Keezhik represents the Southern direction and the soul. The leaves are cleaned from the stems and separated into small pieces, which are used in many ways. When burned, Keezhik acts as a purifier, cleansing the area in which it is burned and emitting a pleasant scent. True cedar is burnt while praying to the Great Mystery in meditation, and also to bless a house before moving in. Cedar was offered to the fire to smudge the lodge and people. It is also used to waft the smoke to ward away sickness. In traditional medicine, a compound decoction of twigs was made into an herbal steam for rheumatism. It works both as a purifier and as a way to attract GOOD energy in your direction. Elders say put some in you shoes and only goodness will come your way. Many traditional women keep some cedar in their left pocket. When you breathe in the smell of cedar you decide that you're going to have courage and stamina and that you're going to survive. You think of what the herb means, why it was given to us.

The four sacred plants are gift of the Four Manido (Spirits of the Four Directions). To those who live in the traditional way, there are four plants which are especially revered and used in daily living. The creator taught us to use the natural herbs of sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, and cedar smoke as a physical reminder to them of this omnipotent presence. It is the sacred way.

I believe this is a traditional teaching from the Ojibwe people.
