Oh, God! That brings into terrible focus the gross contradictions of our (American's) obsessions. Bulimia, anorexia, and whatnot have never caught any sympathy from me. It is comprehensible against what I've seen living in the Philippines, and North and West Africa alone. American women's plight around food has never fallen within the concern of the rest of the world when it is outside the perimeters of survival. We have privilege. We have privileged concerns and worries that belong only to the elite when it comes to food. Our excess distresses and shudders the traditional boundaries set up by decency and balance...
